The "Yugchvarte" or ornithological observatory lit ltossitten, East Prussia, can look back 011 30 years of work. It lies 011 tho main route taken by migratory birds in the spring and autumn, and as many as a half-million birds have been observed on a single day, including 40,000 chaffinches in one hour. Professor Thienemann, former head of the observatory, years ago introduced the practice of catching birds, placing a ring 011 a l opr. and releasing them. In 1927 nl>oui 1 000.000 birds were thus ringed in Rossittcn, and other observatories have adopted the nraetice. Reports have been received concerning about 35 000 of these, throwing much now light on the migrations and habits of th« various species. One of the largest employers of disabled labour is the British Legion. I" its poppy factorv alone every one of the 267 employees is a disabled exservice man, and they turned out over 31,000,000 poppies last year.
