BOROUGH COUNCILS

SUMNER. The regular meeting of the Sumner Borough Council >vaa held last evening. Present: Tho Deputy-Mayor (Cr. F. C. Cooper), Crs. A. Holden, E. F. Sandford, P. F. Oldridge, F. H. K. Neville, J. E. Tait, C. I. Denham, and 11. W. Harris. Reference to the death of the Hon. John Barr was made by the Deputy-Mayor. He said that Mr Barr had worked hard in tho interests of the borough, not only in municipal affairs but on the School Committee And other local bodiefc. His activities extended to Redcliffs, and he had had a considerable term as a councillor, culminating, in his appointment as Mayor from 19171023, in which position he displayed great keenness and tact. A great loss had been suffered by the borough when Mr Barr had given up active participation in municipal affairs. The Deputy-Mayor moved that the Council express its deepest regret at Mr Barr'a death; that the Council places on record its appreciation of his groat services to the borough, and that an expression of sympathy be sent to his widow and family. The motion was seconded by Cr. Holden, and carried. The engineer reported in detail on work done since the previous meeting of the Council. He submitted a list of houses in the RodolifFs s&wer area fvhich are within the required distance of the Bewer rrfains, but are not connected. It was decided to send a final notice to the people concerned. In connexion with an application from a resident in Queen street for a protective stone wall, the engineer said that it would not be advisable to accede to the request. The Under-Secretary, Department of Internal Affairs, wrote statin? that with reference to the proposed alteration to the Sumner boundary line, it had been decided not to make any alteration. Cr. J. E. Tait was appointed the Council's representative on the Borough Picnic Committee.
