UNEMPLOYMENT.

PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTIONS. NO APPEAL IN AUCKLAND. association telegram-; AUCKLAND, December 9. The action of the -Mayor of Wellington in opening a public subscription list to provide funds on which to claim tlio "Unemployment Board's subsidy is not .to be followed by the Mayor of Auckland. "I have no intention of calling for public subscriptions at the. present time," said Mr Daildon this moiiiing. '•The people of Auckland have responded very generously in tlie past to appeals to help the unemployed and they have also responded very liberally to many other appeals of a public and a private nature which have been made upon them. In fact, it would not be going too far , to suggest that those who are fortunate enough to have a position or to be in receipt of a small income have been tiled almost white in endeavouring to assist those in distressed circumstances. A Limit to Generosity. "I know very well that the people of Auckland have the will to give, but there is a limit to what they can do. They are now paying the usual Government and local body taxation. The men have been called upon to pay the unemployment levy and they will contribute still further by reason of the amounts found by the City Council and other local authorities for unemployment relief works which are now being put in hand. Asking them to do more at the present juncture would., in my opinion, be too much." NO VACATION FOR RELIEF WORKERS. U'K2SS ASSOCIATION tBLEOSMi.) DUNEDIN, December 9. The Hon. V<\ 15. Taverner has forwarded the following telegram to Mr M. J. Savage, M.P. for Auckland West:— •' Keferring to your telegram regarding Christinas pay for workmen on public works, the position is that jobs which close down from December l'.lth do not necessarily include relief works. As relief workers are not entitled to any statutory holidays or annual leave on pay, 1 have directed the Department that, relief works are not to be compuhsorilv closed down for the usual (Jiiristntas and New Year vacation this vear. 1 have also instructed the. Department that any relief workers who desire to remain at work are to be allowed to do so; and that, those who prefer to have the usual vacation are to be automatically granted time off without pay." FARM CAMPS. iPUKSS ASSOCIATION TELEGUAH. I INVERCAKGILL, December S>. A conference of representatives of local bodies with Mr George Finn, a member o" the Unemployment. Board, took place to-day, the Mayor (Mr Campbell; and the lion. P. A. de la Pcrrellc being present. Air Finn explained the scheme for providing work on farms, the men being placed in camps under experienced men and distributed, among farms in the neighbourhood. The Board had not fixed wages at 14s a day: that was a matter for the Arbitration Court. The works to be undertaken would be reproductive and there would I be no costly staffs. Conditions in the camps would be made congenial and an opportunity would lie given suitable men to settle on the land. The conference resolved to form a central committee to operate with subcommittees in the country centres. AUCKLAND REGISTRATIONS. II'P.ESS ASSOCIATION' TELEGRAM.I AUCKLAND, December 9. When registrations under the Unemployment Act began, it was estimated by the Auckland postal authorities that the total number legally obliged to register in Auckland city and suburbs was 125,000. This figure was arrived at by allowing an average of two males of twentv vears and over to ca'cli house In the district. When the registration period closed on November 11th, about 90,000 persons had registered. The number of those who failed to register is uncertain, but, allowing 15,000 as a margin for error in the original estimate, I it would appear that 20,000 persons in Auckland area arc now liable to prosecu- } tion.
