LEARN TO SWIM WEEK.
USE OF TEPID BATHS. CENTRE'S APPLICATION REFUSED. The refusal of the Baths Committee oi the City Council to allow the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand amateur Swimming Association the free use of the Municipal Baths for instruction during the learn-to-swim week (from December 35th to December 20th) was criticised at a meeting of those interested in the project last evening. Jt was decided to take the matter up with the committee. The application was for the free use of the baths for one hour each evening during the week of the campaign, and suggested that to ensure that only learners take advantage of the free hour, officers of the Centre be given authority to eject from the baths all other persons. The reply from the Baths Committee stated tliat the committee regretted being unable to accede to the request. The worth of the project, to the community was realised, but the general falling off of revenue at the baths was causing the committee some concern. "It is unnecessary to say that the committee's refusal camo as a great surprise to the Centre," stated Mr S. Hollander, who presided at the meeting. "Personally I was astounded at the Baths Committee's short-sighted action in refusing the application. If the committee could only look ahead it would see that if we taught 200 or 300 children to swim the revenue from the baths would probably be greatly increased. "Hut we are not here to teach the committee sense. Certainly the learn-to-swim week will go on. The Baths Committee will not stop that. "We will have to go on with the instruction at the outside baths. That will not be so convenient, but we will be able to carry on." Deputation to Committee. Surprise was also expressed by Mr F. J. Prouting, who moved that the meeting go further with its application, and send a deputation to the committee, the motion being seconded pro-forma. "We had sole use of the baths last year," stated the chairman, during the discussion which followed. "Possibly wc did not control the attendance very wisely, and perhaps a few persons had a free swim, but it was intended to take steps this year to stop that." Tt was suggested by Miss D. Brown that those learners who were unable to pay in the ordinary way for admission to the baths could gain their instruction at the outside baths. "Anybody who is keen to learn will pay," said Mr G. Laurie. Messrs S. Hollander and V. G. Spiller were appointed a sub-committee to meet the Baths Committee and endeavour 1o come to some arrangement. Method of Instruction. The nature of the instruction which will be followed during the week was then discussed by the meeting, opinion being generally in favour of a proposal to commence all instruction with the '' dog-paddle.'' Besides the Municipal Baths, if made available, instruction will be carried out at the following:—Linwood, East Cliristchurcli, Elmwood, St. Albans, Sydenham, Opawa, Bcckenham, Phillipstown, I'endaltoii, and Spreydon.
