MUSIC CLASSES IN SCHOOLS.
CONCERT TO DECIDE SCHOLARSHIP HOLDERS. At the Jellicoe Hall last evening pupila from the suburban school music classes conducted by Mrs E. Dalton and Miss C. Bell presented a concert, which clearly indicated the worth of the tuition they had received. Mr C. Francis explained in an introductory address that none of the children had been privately taught nor had any received more than 18 months' class teaching. East Christchurch, Richmond, Wharenui, Linwood, Phillipstown, and Opawa were the primary schools represented in the first programme. A scholarship of free tuition is to bo awarded in each school, and the concert was organised so that the contestants might be judged on the performance of set pieces as well as on the year's marks. Mr Findlay Robb acted as judge. None of the awards will be announced until after tho second concert on Friday evening. Almost all the items were given on tho piano, although there were one or two violin items. The performers from the different schools were:—East Christchurch: Muriel Gilbertson, Phyllis Stewart, Lester Wilson. Richmond: Ray Ilannan, Dulcie Burro 11, Eric Hunter, Jack Phillips, Sylvia Smith, Helen Powell, Eva Stevens, Joan Palmer, Dulcie Burrell, and Ray Hannan (duet). Wharenui: Kathleen Diffin, Lance Osborne, Lucy Hampton, Gladys Vivian, John Mechen (violin). Linwood: Rona Osborne, Patricia Fowler, Rona Moore, Evelyn Scott, Ngaire Harris, Beryl Seeker, Betty Campbell, Thelma Tudhope, Sylvia and Vivienne Turner (duct). Phillipstown: Annora Wright, Geraldine Reid, Lorna McLachlan, Phyllis Rae, Kennedy Watson, Mervyn Edmonds, Natalie Scott, Ken Wright. Opawa: Excelda Beswick, Josey Boyce, Alison Stewart, Gwyneth Ivory, Nan Blackwcll. The second half of the programme was provided by the pupils of Miss Iris Edmonds, who gave a very attractive programme, as follows:— Jazz ballet, the intermediates; the clown, Ken Buchanan; operatic, Joyce Matthews; gipsy Glory Owen; piano solo, Betty Moorfield; operatic, Vonnie Whall; "Bouquet of Roses," the babies; skipping, Thelma Preece; operatic duo, Eileen Connor and Daphne Stone; Russian, Betty Moorfield; acrobatic, Shirley Mulhane; "Tally-Ho," ]YoIa Fail; Sea Foam," Valerie Cater; doll, Shona Clark; Irish jig, N eville Miller: operatic Leone Pauling; ballet militairo, the juniors.
