WORKING HOURS OF TAXI-DRIVERS.
QUESTION BEFORE CITY COUNCIL. The number of hours a week whk-is some Christchurch taxi-drivers ai® compelled to work and the wages ti*ey receive for such work 'was brought to the attention of the City Council a* last night's meeting by Cr. "W. H. Williamson. Recently, said Cr. "Williamson, » verandah in Colombo street had been knocked dowir by a car, the driver of Which had been said to be asleep. Over tho previous week-end there had been a similar case. The Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer): Did the cars both belong to the same firm? Cr. Williamson: I don't know-. The Councillor added that the attention of Parliament should be called to the matter. A law should bo made prohibiting taxi-drivers being called on to work more than a certain number of hours a week. The Mayor: I agree that something should be done; but we have no jurisdiction. Cr. E. Parlane said one driver hiMi told him that he had never had Ms clothes off from 10 o'clock on Saturday night till 10 o'clock on the Tuesday morning following. He had also seea a time-book of another driver Wh-a, over a period of three months, had worked from 84 to 124$ hours a week. These drivers were making only from £1 10s to £2 a week. The Council decided to follow Cr. Williamson's suaiestion.
