NO MORE SUBSIDIES.
EDUCATION DEPARTMENT'S DECISION. 'M regret to have to inform you that, owing to lack of funds, no further subsidies can bo approved this financial year in connexion with any voluntary contributions; moreover the Treasury Department has notified that the amount allocated for subsidies lias been exhausted, and no further payments can be made until after March 31st next." This information was received by the Canterbury Education Board on Saturday from an officer of the Education Department, on behalf of the Director of Education, Mr T. B. Strong. The Board was advised on Friday that the Department could not pay any turtlier subsidies 011 contributions raised to aid the funds of school libraries, and Saturday's telegram goes a good deal further. It is believed that a number of school committees have already committed themselves to expenditure and the whole question will probably come up for discussion at the next meeting of the Board.
