BROADSIDING.

INTERPROVINCIAL MATCH. A WIN FOR OTAGO. Attracted by the prospect of a good evening's entertainment, which prospect was more than fulfilled, and by a beautifully fine evening, many thousands of people went to Monica Park on Saturday evening to see the third broadsiding programme of the season. With one or two exceptions, the events were well fought out >*rith close and exciting finishes. The interprovincial contest between riders from Canterbury and Otago was a decidedly popular innovation? This was decided by nine matches, a win tu each one giving three points, a second two points, and a third one point. It was eventually won by Otago by 27 points to 26.. Thrills came early, for m the Grand Parade of the interprovincial teams, the second lap of which was dono at speed, one of the Otago riders, who was well to the front, fell just round one of the bends. He was not hurt, but got, up and picked up his mount and stood holding it, the crowd giving horrified wasps as the following riders roared past on cither side of him, missing him b> inches only. Then in the first match of the interprovincial contest, S. K. Jfussell (Canterbury) brought off a most spectacular crash in front of the main grandstand. The machine appeared to go into a wobble which the rider was unable to rectify, and eventually ho came off and slid along for some distance with the machine on top of him. He had to be carried off, and at first many thought that he had been badly injured, but it was later announced that he had injured a shoulder and was otherwise unhurt. He was not able to ride again during the evening. There were several more crashes, in some of which the machines reared and bucked in true wild Western fashion, but, iu every case tho rider picked himself vp as soon as he had come to rest. Some mild amusement was afforded the spectators in the stand when tlie.v observed that some trees on the oast, side of the park were black with young peoplo of ■ both sexes, who, of course, obtained an excellent view. Some of them fvere' perched rather precariously, but others had rigged up some sort of seat and appeared to be quite comfortable. The Interprovincial Match. Those responsible for arranging the interprovincial match are to be congratulated on tho move. Not only docs such a match provide greater interest for the public, but it affords the riders the chance of watching tho action methods of riders from other centres, and possibly learning something from them. H. Mangham, the Otago rider, clearly showed himself superior to any of the Canterbury men on Saturday evening, though E- K. Marsh was nearly as good, and E. G. Pyke and C. Blacklock were not far below his standard. Maugham's machine was possessed of terrific power of acceleration, and he was always first round the corner after the fall of the flag. When he was leading, he kept his front wheel close to the grass all the time, and went round the bends in beautiful slides. When about to overtake he kept fairly wide out and came swooping in at the corners. Incidentally, he at times appeared to cut dangerously close in front of the man. he was passing. It was a pity he crashed in the final of the South Island championship, when he and Marsh | were having a magnificent race and providing' th© best spectacle of the evening, as but for the unfortunate spill he would almost certainly have won.
