PERSONAL. (SPECIAL TO THE PBESS.) GREYMOUTH, December 7. Miss Muriel Waugh, of Christchurch, has been appointed judge in the dancing sections for the Westland Competitions 3931 festival. Mr and Mrs A. Williams, who have been visiting relatives in Greymouth, returned yesterday to Wellington. Mrs A. O'Donnell (Roa), accompanied by her mother, Mrs R. Kirwan, left for Christchurch yesterday. Sister R. O'Neill and Nurse J. Smith, of the Grey Hospital staff, returned to Greymouth after annual leave yesterday. Mrs T. Clark returned to Christchurch yesterday after visiting relatives in Greymouth. Nurse J. Wills, who has been relieving at the Grey Hospital, returned yesterday to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs T. Mcßride (Matanui) left yesterday on a holiday visit to Christchurch. Obituary. The death took place in the Old j People's Home, Westport, on Friday, ! of Frank Cartwright, a native of Corn- ! wall, England. lie came to New Zealand 17 years ago, and worked as a miner at Denniston. | Residence Destroyed. \ Fire at Kaiata, on Friday night, totally destroyed a six-roomed dwelling owned by the Coates estate, and occupied by Mr and Mrs I. Barrow and their family. The fire had a good hold when discovered, and the occupants had tc make a hurried exit. Nothing was saved. The building, which was erected about 10 years ago, was insured for £250. New Church. It is stated that the ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the Anglican Church at Waiho will be performed by his Excellency, Lord Bledisloe, in February next. Blackball Mine. The anxiety regarding the steady rise ( the water in the abandoned dip extension section of the Blackball mine is still acute. Grey Valley Road. The final link in completing the main road from Nelson Creek through Bell Hill to Rotomanu is being carried out at Brown River, where the road devia'■iii to the # bridge site is nearing comi ion. Twenty-one chains have been icd and metalled, about ten chains . . niaining to be formed. Unemployment. Owing to the closing of several sawmills in the district, the stopping of work on the Lewis Pass road, the completion of the Mitchell's to Inchbonnie road, the Kanieri Lake road, and the Education Reserve road at Hari Hari, a considerable number of men will be added to the ranks of the unemployed. With a view to keeping the unemployment problem at a minimum on the West Coast, Mr O'Brien, M.P., is proceeding to Wellington to endeavour to get the money voted for the Greymouth road district expended at once. Cyqle Road Race. The Brunner Sports Club held a cycle road race yesterday from Taylorville to liunanga. The results were:— H. Turtill (20sec) .. ..1 P. Duffy (3min) . . 2 ' J. Doig (4min 30sec) 3 Cricket. To-day's cricket fixtures under the "West Coast Cricket Association so far available are as follows: — Brunnerton B scored a three-point win from Marist B. Brunner made 108 runs in their first innings (Kerr 62), and in the second 6S for one wicket (Hunt 46, Kerr not out 16), a total of 176. Marist compiled 76 in the first innings (O'Donnell 24, Morel 19), and 02 in the second (Morel 27, O'Donnell 17, Casey 15), a total of 168. Marist A beat United by 164 to 68 in a one-innings match. Yesterday's third grade fixture resulted:—Runanga secured a three-point win from Technical Old Boys at Dunnollie. Runanga compiled 56 in their first innings (Wilson 12, Wilde 12), and 126 for six wickets in their second (Greening 34, Kennedy 32, Wilson 19), a total of IR2. Technical College compiled 60 in their first innings (Scott 16, Lindbom 14), and 116 in their second (Chalmers 32, Scott 30). Playing a friendly game, Civil Service beat United 201-96. For Civil Service Baldwin scored 43 retired, R. Bunt 52, Gilbert 32, Kennedy 28. For United Bruerton 23 and Smythe 13 were the best scorers. Child's Body round. A Press Association telegram from Hokitilta says that a single young woman was found in a collapsed state on Friday and removed to hospital. On Saturday the remains of a newlyborn female child were found locked in a trunk. A post-mortem examination has been ordered.
