I'rolestor Allen was educated at N'.iwingtoii College, New South Wales, and Sydney University, where he took tho iiaehelor ol' Arts degree. Ho matriculated at New College, Oxford, 1010, and obtained a First-Class in the Honour School of ,1 urispriKlenee in 1i.'12, and was fleeted to thti Khi-.-ii Law Scholarship in. 1913. 1!.. r-'-rved in tho War with the Middlesex Kegiment, retiring with the rank of caplain. He was awarded ihe Military Cross in September. 191 S. He was elected Fellow of University College in 1920. ami served as Law Tutor there until 1029. lie was Dean of University College from 1923 to 192(5. and Junior Proctor for tho year 1925-1920. In 192'.) lie was appointed I'rofc«sor n ' .1 urisnrndence at Oxford Ho li ■'3 published "Law in the Making" (Clarendon Press. 1928), and was responsible for part of the nineteenth edition of Stephen's Commentaries. Tho number of Tfhodes Scholars regularly in residence for either the whole ol 1 the academic year, 1929-30, or some jmrt of it, totalled .187, of whom 101 belonged to the British Empire, and 86 to tho U.S.A. Sixty-eight Scholars took up their scholarships,,for the first time. For one or longer, there were also in residence 21 ex-scholars. The Degrees, Honours, and Distinctions List included some New Zealand names, among them being: D.Phil.—M. Barak, 1926 (Hereford College), in Physics. B.C.L.—A. L. Hat-lam, 1927 (Oriel), Second-Class. Pinal Honour Schools: First-Class, Jurisprudence—J. F. F. Platts-Miils, 1928 (Balliol). Do., Second-Class —C. A. Sharp, 1928 (St. John's). Tin following were among those who proceeded to Degrees for which they had qualified. D.Phil.—A. L. Haslam and M. Barak (in absence). In athletics, W. E. Henley (1929) represented Oxford against Cambridge, in Eugby football. For the M.A., student and tutor of Christchurch, was appointed to a Rhodes Travelling Fellowship. .Mr Taylor is u New Zealand or, who has had a brilliant career at Oxford, and who included the Dominion in his tour. He has recently returned to Oxford from Egypt.
