EARTHQUAKE IN BURMA.
FORTY PERSONS KILLED. trains derailed and bridges wrecked. (CKlTro TKEaa ASSOCIATION BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.) (Received December sth, 7 p.m.) CALCUTTA, December 4. Forty persons were killed and many were injured in the Pyu area, near Toungoo, in an earthquake which was experienced throughout Burma to-day. A large number of buildings were destroyed, and the courthouse and two railway bridges were badly damaged in Pyu. Several trains were completely derailed by the earth movements. In some places the rails sank five feet, and the bridg;- girders were torn from the trestles. The damage to the railway has caused suspension of the service between Upper Burma and Lower Burma. Fire broke out following tho shocks, and several shops were gutted. Heavy damage was caused to buildings in Toungoo, but Rangoon escaped lightly. The earthquake was of great intensity and long duration. [A Wellington message says that a good seismograph record of the Burma earthquake was obtained at the Dominion Observatory.]
