ASHBURTON. PRISONER ESCAPES FROM RAKAIA. About 8.45 a.m. yesterday William Francis Taylor escaped from the Rakaia gaol, where he was being detained on charges of alleged breaking and entering and theft at Dromore and Sherwood. Dedication Festival. The Parish Church of St. Andrew's, Tinwald, celebrated its dedication festival this week. Personal. Mr G. 0. Wake, who has been in the Public Trust' Office in Ashburton for the past two years, has been transferred on promotion to Hawera, and will leave Ashburton early in the New Year. He will be succeeded by Mr G. H. Watson, of Christchurch. Mr C. M. Gray, who has been temporarily on the staff of tho Technical School as science master, has been appointed instructor in agriculture at the school. Juvenilo Court. In the Juvenile Court yesterday, before Mr 11. Galbraith, J.P., a youth, who was charged with wilfully damaging a gorse fence at Ashton, was ordered to pay £l, the cost of the damage. Technical School Board. At the monthly meeting of the Technical School Board yesterday there were present: Messrs It. Galbraith (chairman), W. Bramley, W. T. Li 11, P. J. E. Smallbonc, G. W. Andrews, R. Houston, W. G. Hillier, and T.. Hayes. The financial statement showed a credit balance of £3G6 14s. The Minister for Education (the Hon. H. Atmore) telegraphed that ho would be pleased to visit the Bchool when in Ashburton. Mr Thompson reported that owners of sheep provided for the Technical shearing class were pleased with the manner in which the sheep had been Bhorn. About 2600 sheep bad been dealt with. Mr Thompson reported that there had been acts of vandalism in the school swimming baths last season. It was agreed that trespassers in tho swimming baths be prosecuted. Mr Hillier referred to the departure of Mr Galbraith from Ashburton, and said he would like to bear testimony to Mr Galbraith's fairness as a member and chairman of the Board. He moved that they place on record their appreciation of his services to the Board and school during the time he has been a member and chairman.

Mr Thompson expressed appreciation of the great amount of time that Mr Galbraith had devoted to the affairs of the school.

Every other member oC the Board also spoke. The motion was carried by acclamation, and Mr Galbraith returned thanks. Tennis. The Ashburton branch of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union held a gift afternoon at the residence of Mr and Mrs W. J. Moore, Walnut avenue, yesterday, in aid of the Maori School at To Teko. There waa an attendance of 40, and the appeal for gifts met with a good response. During tho afternoon Mrs Moore g&vo an interesting account of work among tho Maoris., Vo.tfal solos were given by Mesdames A. J. Ching, and A. B. Shaw, and Miss McLauehlan. Fanciers' Club. The committee of tho Ashburton East Swimming Club met last evening, Mr Jj. A. Marshall presiding. Votes of thanks were passed to Messrs T. 11. Dunham and I. Baigent, for donations, and to Mr G. Bowman, for his offer of a trophy. Mr R. Jl/Ong was appointed caretaker. METHVEN. Although her death occurred after a protracted illness, and was not therefore unexpected, a gloom was cast over the district when it was learned that Mrs C. Nordquist, of Mctliven, had passed away. Sho Mas b >rn in the district 43 years ago, and was a daughter of Mr James McCroauor, one of the district's early settlers, and living in the district, all her life had made a large number of friends. The interment took place at the .Methven Cemetery, the Rev. Father T. W. Price officiating, first at the Roman Catholic Church and afterwards at the graveside. Tho pall-bearers were Messrs T. H. McGirr, 11. Green, Jerome McAnulty, and C. JT. Ireland. Many beautiful floral tributes were placed on the grave. Thc.se were sent by the following:—.Husband and family, Mr and Mrs W. <T. MAYFIELD. A meeting of the Alayfield branch of the Farmers' Union was lield in the Band Hall, the president (Air 1). .[?. Ilowden) presiding over a good attendance. Correspondence was received from llic Ashburton Tower Board, sotting out. the general costs of administration of the Board compared with other similar Boards. Considerable discussion took place regarding 4ho serious position of farmers as a result of the financial depression. Mr It. Oakley moved, and Mr A. V. Barrett seconded, "That I lie Government be asked to remove the duty on all imported goods used by farmers, particularly woollen goods.''' It was 'said that under the present law, if this Dominion was not producing wool all woollen goods could bo purchased very much cheaper. Too much . protection was being given to secondary industries at present.
