OBITUARY.

MR JOHN W. BROWN. A -well-known resident o£ Nelson, Mr John Wilson. Brown, died suddenly at five o'clock yesterday morning at his homo, "Lark Hall," Richardson street, Nelson. Mr Brown, who was 59 years of: age, was tho second son of tho lato Alexander Brown, who started the Anchor Foundry in Nelson. Mr Brown was a native of Nelson, and was educated as a marine engineer. Jn addition to pursuing his profession on Home vessels, ho also followed it on board gome of the Union .Steam Ship Company's vessels. For a time ho was connected with tho management of tho Anchor Shipping and Foundry Company. Ho has been an invalid for several years, but on Wednesday he appeared to be improved in health. Mr Brown was cheery and bright in disposition, and was very popular. ITo leaves a widow and four daughters—Mrs W. J. Thompson and Mrs L. W. Field, and the Misses Isabel and Eileen Brown. His brothers are Messrs Thomas and Irvine Brown, of Nelson, and his sisters are Mrs R. B. Ward, of Christchurch, and Mrs Andridge, of Rarotonga.

MR A. FRASER. [THE rKESS Special Service.] DUN'EDIN, December Mr Alexander Fraser, aged 90, who died yesterday, was one of tho Gabriel's Gully pioneers. Now that bo has passed away, Mr Frank Moylo is the only Gabriel's Gully pioneer left m tho Lawrence district. Alter leaving the diggings, Mr Fraser settled to farming at Forsyth, lour or live miles on tho WethersLono side oi Lawrence. In liis retirement ho lived quietlv at Lawrence. In his active days ho was a member of tho Tuapeka County Council and the Lawrence Borough Council, lie once stood for Parliament, the other candidates being Messrs Vincent, Pvke, C. C. Rawlins, and F. M. Bvrne, Air l'vke winning. One of Mr Eraser's last appearances in public affairs was at tin; recent Lawrenco School Jubilee celebrations.
