PHILOSOPHICAL INSTITUTE.

ANNUAL MEETING HELD. The annual meeting of the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury was held last evening, Dr. R. R. D. Milligan presiding. In moving the adoption of the annual report, which has appeared in The Press, Dr. Milligan said that the membership of 197 was not large enough. The Institute played an important part in the life of the community, and a greater interest should be taken in its activities. Tho president moved that a letter of appreciation be sent to Mr Rowe, of the Museum, for the assistance he had given the Institute for many years with its library. Seconding the motion, which was carried, Mr G. Jobberns said that it drew attention to tho question of a permanent home for the library. The Museum authorities allowed the Institute space for it, but the M"useum itself was crowded. He would not liko to see the library removed from the Museum and it might be possible to interest the public in a proposal for extending the building, if that were done room might be found there permanently for the library.

The treasurer's report was moved by Mr Jobberns, who said that it showed a slight improvement in the financial position of the Institute since the last annual meeting. There was a credit balance of £7l 14s 6d.
