ROAD BOARD.

MT. HUTT. The monthly meeting of the Mt. Hutt Road Board was presided over by Mr F. W. Ruddenklau, and there were also present— Messrs E. J. S. Wilson, D. Hampton, A. 81.B 1 . Marr, and 0. A. Campion. Reporting: on the road leading to Mr E. J. Watson's property, the clerk stated that it was necessary to have the gorse removed before grading could be done. The matter was left in tiie clerk's hands to be attended The total amount of rates paid to date is £559 10s Bd. Applications to plough road frontages for the eradication of gorse, were made by Messrs W. J. Stoekdill and E. A. Woolley. and wore granted subject to the usual conditions. Mr J. L. Blair wrote complaining of storm water pipes not being large enough to carry water from his property. It was decided to hold this matter over until more urgent work has been completed. A transfer from the estate of Chas. T. Ellen to A. W. McKendry was approved. The Board decided to offer by public auction the right to cut cocksfoot on the roads in the Mt. Hutt area on January Bth. In connexion with the circular letter from the Unemployment Board, offering .£25.000 to local bodies to relieve unemployment, prior to the Christmns holidays, the Board considered the matter at length and passed the following resolution: —"That this Board wishes to strongly protest against the principle of paying 14s a day for relief work, in view of the fact that farmers are at present unable to pay their farm workers atthi3rate. and in most cases the farmer himself is unable to earn this amount per day." At the same time members of the Board expressed themselves in full sympathy with the object of unemployment relief works, but regretted that they were unable to offer any* thing suitable at the moment, owing to the present schedule of works being complete.
