EVENING MEETING.
KEEN RELAY RACES.
Lacking first-class sprinters, th« Vanity C T ub had to tako sooond place again to the Canterbury Club in a well-fought relay race at .Lancaster Park last evening, when the third evening athletic meeting of the season wau held. The Svdenhum Club were responsiblo lor ihe coniiui ot the racvN und provided an interesting programme, with runners continuing to snow distinct improvement on earlier peri ormancus. The 'Varsity Club, with two strong quartermilers, 1). F. Anderson aad U. C. Harley, were expected to extend the Canterbury Club in a reia-y over four instances oi 'l-iOyus, 4-iOvds, -J.-2Vyds and 2-Uyds, but ufter gamin-- "an early lend ihcy lost ground to the Canterbury Club sprinters, K. Anderson, who was making his Jiist appearanco in open company, ran a sterling quarter milo for 'Varsilv aim wvm straight ;o ihe front ahead of A. Bullivaut, of C.A.A.C., maintaining a lead of three vards when he handed the baton to O. C. Harley. Harley did not run well, and was passed in the straight by 11. Blackmore, who finished very strongly, and C.A.A.C. had no difficulty in holding a convincing lead over the sprints, though P. A. M. Williams and V. B. Todd ran well for 'Varsity. .Anderson, who two seasons ago was the outstanding schoolboy runner in Canterbury, did very well to heat last year's provincial champion., and showed that when ho is properly fit ho will bo very fast over the quarter inile.
The B grade relay, froqi the point of view of evennesa of teams, provided a Btill better race, and of the six teams competing, three wero on level terms all the way, with the others always handy. Sydenham were first to show out, New Brighton and Old Hoys alternating in second and third places. When the last furlong was reached it. A. Jorgensen, the fast-improving New Brighton sprinter, went away to a lead on tho bend, and held tho Sydenham man five yards hack at the finish. C.A.A.C'. B wero ten yards back, having displaced Old Boys over the later stages. Technical and * Varsity B were in fifth and sixth places respectively. Jorgensen was prominent in the 100 yards open handicap, which ho won off 55 yards in oven lime, recording l 10 seconds i)oth in his heat and final. ITe was out of tho holes very fast, and though a little slow over the first 50 yard 5 *, finished very hard to gain a clear win by two feet from G. F. Hart, who wm early in ft good position from tho back mark. Hart ran surprisingly well off -5 yards, and is proliahly tho fastest man in Canterbury at the present time. Running easily, M. R. Robinson ('Varsity) took first plneo in tho two miles open handicap, with comparative ease. After h© had overhauled tho leaders In the fifth lap, he found tho pac* too slow and was eager to po to tho front. Tie was pressed In the seventh lap by A. Mather (C.A.A.C.), who made a hrpik of If> yards at one stage, only to fall baefc to thfrd at tho finish. Results are as follows: 100 YARDS A GRADE HANDICAP. First Heat—R. A. Jorgensen (54yds) 1, R. Tho field of 14 was wolt strung out for the first three laps, when Robinson and W. Sarffison, off the same mark, wore down the leaders and Robinson took the pace. Eight runners wero bunched for the rest of the race, and provided a great mile. Mather, W. Dromgoolo (220 yds), nnd Robinson Alternated with the lend until the last quarter, when Robinson made no mistake and went out at a solid pare. Tie won without being pressed by 20 yards, Mather finishing strongly 10 yards behind. 220 YARDS WOMEN'S HANDICAP. Miss G. Williams (Sumner), CJyds . . ..1 Miss V. Boyd (New Brighton), SJyds .. ..a Miss A. Lamford (Sumner), 9yds 3 Time, llsec. A great race, with the field level at halfway. The winner drew ahead to a lead of a foot at the finish, inches between second and third. A GRADE RELAY (440, 410, 220, 220). C.A.A.C. (A. Bullivnnt, M. Blackmore, R. Cordery, G. F. Ilart) .. ..1 'Varsity .» 2 . Sumner • « • » 8 Time, 2min 37sec. D. F. Anderson ('Varsity) started with a strong run to take the lead from Bullivant and gavo O. C. Harloy the baton three yards ahead. Blackmore made the ground up in fine style, and in a fast quarter beat tho 'Varsity man in tho straight, and Cordery went away with a small lead, which he increased to 10 yards when Ilart took tho baton, C.A.A.C. winning by that amount. Sumner were somo distance back in the first quarter, and failed to make any impression on the leading teams. B GRADE RELAY (440, 440, 220, 220.) New Brighton (R. Marriott, F: Gallacher, H. C. New Brighton came up in the second distance, lying behind Sydenham for tho greater part of tho race, Jorgensen finishing fast to take tho lead and win a well contested relay by five yards, C.A.A.C. 10 yards further away.
