NEW ZEALAND AND ADMIRAL BYRD.
TO TITE EDITOR OF TUK PRESS. kir,— I have recently received n copy of your paper (of date September 13th, 1030), in which appears an extract from a letter of inine to my sister in Uangiora New Zealand, telling that I had seen the Byrd South Pole, pictures in this city (Pasadena, California) and that in' 1 lie opening talk friven by Pear-Admiral Byrd he made no reference to New Zealand or New Zealanders. Also that in his speeches ho had made at his homecoming, [ had seen no mention of New Zealand or its people. Sent to mo by the same mail, was a clipping from ;i later Christchurch paper, which told that the pictures had been shown in your City, and of Rear-Admiral Byrd's tribute which he pays to the treatment he received in New Zealand.
In reply, I can onlv repeat what 1 said in my letter. Evidently those remarks of tlu; Rear-Admiral were looked upon as being of no interest to American audiences, .so were omitted over here. 4,<? to not seeing any reference to New Zealand in the RearAdmiral's speeches since his return home, I am speaking of tho accounts which I have read in the papers I regularly see in this part of the United States. It seems hardly possible that he could talk of his trip and not mention little New Zealand, after the wonderful treatment he received there, but it is strange (if he docs) that we don't read of it, for. as you may be aware, the papers here have a wav of serving up every atom of news on a subject—and then some more. —Yours, etc.,
CHAS. H. HITNNIBKT.L. 927 Boston Court, Pnsadena. Cnlifornia, October 29th, 1930.
