W.E.A. ACTIVITIES.

MEETING OF DISTRICT COUNCIL. The Canterbury District Council of th« W.E.A. met on Monday evening, Mr 8. Schofield presiding. In his report on the year*® work, the secretary (Mr O. Manning) act out that la Westland, which had been for years without ft class, there were five in session. In the university district there were 59 classes wita over 1915 students, an increase of 14 classes and 316 students. This expansion was due to the organisation of four tutorial classes, and ten study groups under the Carnegie scheme. The Association was making strenuous efforts to reach every adult, whether in town or country. In the City of Christchurch and suburbs, 21 classes were held; in Timaru 6, in Ashburton 3, and 20 in country districts. Of the total of 50, there were 24 tutorial classes with 1214 students; 25 study circles with 500 students; 10 study groups with 201 students. The District Council had organised and staffed three of the tutorial classes—the folk dancing class, the Pap&rua prison class, and the international relation class. Members of the Christchurch Rotary Club had greatly assisted with the prison class. Regarding finance, the report set out that grants from local bodies, firms, individuals had continued, upon the whole, equal to previous years, but regret was expressed that the Christchurch City Council had not increased its grant to £IOO, had been done in Wellington, Auckland, and Dunedin.
