ACHERON DIVERSION.
COMPLETION LIKELY IN SIXTEEN DAYS. "Such good progress continues to be made that there is every prospect of the Acheron river flowing into Lake Coleridge by December 17th," said the District Public Works Engineer (Mr F. Langbein) yesterday, following an inspection of the diversion work. The last section of concrete for the dam was poured in on Saturday. As .soon as this is properly set, the whole framework will be able to be removed. The delivery of the pipes has been expedited, and many more are now in position on the bench. An official from the Department at Wellington has inspected those pipes which were damaged in transit and found very few serious cracks. The pipes will be laid only to the beginning of the cutting, through which the water will be allowed to flow at a reduced velocity. The small diversion neeessary to avoid the danger of flood at the Murchison homestead is also progressing favourably. To lower the velocity of the water and prevent scouring, two or three weirs are being set in the new channel. A. small bridge over the completed channel will also be necessary. The original number of about 80 men is still employed on the work.
