THEOSOPHY AND CHRISTIANITY.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE FKESS Sir,—The following story has stuck in my memory ever since, us a boy, I had to translate it into French: Two men were engaged in discussion when one, becoming heated, throw a glass or wine in his opponent's face. The latter, calmly wiping his face and dabbing his coat with his handkerchief, replied: "That, sir, was a digression; now for the argument." The story conies to my mind as I read Mr Colonna's charge of ignorance and cowardice. I will treat that, too, as a digression, and recall my opponent to the argument. The "charge" I made (it is Mr Colonna's word, not mine) was that Theosophy and Christianity are incompatible and mutually exclusive. Mr Colonna himself has helped me to substantiate i.he charge, lie says: "The only difference between man and the Christ is this—that man . . . can express but a small fraction of that divinity, while the Christ has become its full expression." The Christian faith is that Jesus Christ is "the only begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very OJpd. Begotten, not made: being of one substance with the Father: by Whom nil things wore made. Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnato . . . and was made Man." The two statements are utterly irreconcilable. Your readers may believe either one or the other, but no sano man can believe both.—-Yours, etc., F. N. TAYLOR. 320 Madras street, December Ist, 1030.
