That much heavier fines should be imposed on motorists convicted of intoxication while in charge of motor vehicles, was suggested to the Main Highways Board by the Hawke's Bay County Council. Mr F. B. Logan remarked that recently a bookmaker was fined £2OO, while a drunken motorist was fined £lO, and his license cancelled for a short period. Ho considered that the punishment was not commensurate with the crime, as a drunken motorist was an absolute menace to human life, and at the least should be prohibited from driving a car for all time. Mr F. YV. Furkert replied that it was not a matter for the Board, but he agreed that the punishment should be heavier. If he had his wav he would not hesitate to fi" e a drunken motorist £2OO ancl cancel his license for life. Although _ tho Board could not give the council assistance it would give its moral support.
