presented that 200 men would bo engaged, but so far the bureau Lad received instructions to tako only SO—--40 on Monday, 20 on Tuesday, and 20 on Wednesday. A total of 1080 men was registered at the bureau. Work would be provided for about 300 men for 10 or 14 days before Christmas, said Cr. Boanland. A Serious Position. Mr Barnsley asked what would be done for tho 700 who were not provided for under the scheme, as the position was becoming serious, and some of the single men had got tho idea that it would be just as comfortable inside gaol as out of it. He suggested that they should apportion some of the funds of tho Municipal Electricity Department towards relief works. The Department had promised to make a donation of £6OO, £4OO of which ■would- p>robably be distributed among the depots in the City, and £2OO paid into the fund for the provision of work, said Cr. Boanland. He agreed to ?i Bairnsley's suggestion before tho Mayor. Returned soldiers were not given preference on relief works he said, except where a special subsidy was received from tho Returned Soldiers' Association. _ Mr li. T. Armstrong, M.P., said that it was useless to expect the City Council or the Unemployment Board to solve the problem in a few days. Both were doing their best to relieve the position in the meantimo, and tho City Council was only one employer of labour in Christchurch. The subsidy offered by the Unemployment Board was very liberal, and he urged that every effort should be made to obtain as largo a share of it as possible. The thanks of the men to Cr. Beanland and Mr Armstrong were conveyed toy Mr Barnsley. J
