SANDERS CUP TRIALS.
♦ COLLEEN WINS FIRST RACE. The first trial race to select a boat and crew to represent Canterbury in the Sanders Cup contest at Dunedin in February was held at Lyttelton on Saturday afternoon, and resulted in a comfortable win for Colleen, which represented Canterbury for the past two years, over the new boat, Irene. Colleen was skippered by George Brassell, a former Cornwell Cup winner. Brassell sailed a good race all through. Usher, with a young crew, made a creditable showing. Irene's performance was frankly disappointing. Certain changes have been suggested for the next trial, including an exchange of sails between Colleen and Irene, but it is unlikely that this will affect the position. The race was watched by quito a large crowd, including enthusiasts from Christchurch. j The course was a windward and leeI ward one, from the Gladstone Pier, around the Pile Light, thence around the Ripa Island buoy, and back to the Pile Light, twice around. There was a fresh north-easterly breeze, and a moderate sea, the wind lightening a little before the finish. The Crews. The crews were as follows: — Irene—S. Toomey, A. Nolan, M. J. Scott, E. Sinclair. Colleen—G. Brassell, F. Forman, B. Priddy, F. Collins. Usher—J. T. Hobbs, K. Sillars, D. Gower, N. A. Hobbs, The Race.
