CYGNET TOWED FROM WELLINGTON. The steamer Kuku left Wellington at 8.30 on Friday night for Lyttelton with the small steamer Cygnet in tow, and the two vessels arrived at Lyttelton at 7.25 a.m. yesterday after an uneventful trip of 35 hours. The Cygnet will lay up here indefinitely, pending the consideratian of extensive repairs. The Kuku is to undergo overhaul and survey here, and will resume running within a week or two. FOR PACIFIC SERVICE. NEW BIG MATSON LINERS. Among the engine-room staff of the Matson liner Maloio, which arrived at Wellington on Friday from Sydney, is Mr Claude A. Knudsen, who was chief engineer on the company's liner Ventura when she went to the rescue of th& Tahiti's passengers and crew. Mr Knudsen, although ho has been in the employ of the company for many years, is travelling on the Malolo on her present cruise to gain experience in a big ship, preparatory to being transferred to one of the two big steamers which are at- present being built at Massachusetts for the Matson Line's Australian service. The Mat»on Line at present has three steamers engaged in the San Francisco-Sydney service, the Ventura, 5986 tons, the Sierra, 6023 tons, and the Sonoma, 5985 tons, all of which were built in 1900. and it is intended to replace these three ships with the two steamers now being built. It is expected that they will be completed in 1932, and they will each have a length of 632 ft and a breadth of 79ft, with a displacement of 26,000 tons. They will be about 80ffc longer than the Malolo, but over 4ft less in width. Their speed will, lie between 18 nnd 20 knots, compared with the Malolo's sea speed of over 21 knots. It is understood that a third vessel has also been ordered.
HIMATANGI SOLD. PURCHASED BY ANCHOR COMPANY. The sale was completed on Saturday of the coastal steamer Himatangi from the Holm Shipping Company to the Anchor Company. The Himatangi was owned by the Himatangi Shipping Company, of which the Holm Shipping Company are the managing owners. Under her new owners, tho Himatangi will engage in the general coastal run, leaving Wellington to-day for Nelson. Captain \V. "YVahlstrom will be in command. - The-Himatangi was built at Ardrass;_sn, on the Clyde, in 1911, for tho North Coast Steam Navigation Company, Limited. She was then the Coolebfir, and ns such ran on the Australian coast, until last year, when-she came over to New Zealand. Sho was renamed Himatangi in June of last year. She is a steel twin-screw steamer of'^/9'tons gross register.

Company's new mail steamer Monowai, which during the past t'hrefe weeks lias been under conversion from a two-class P. and O. liner into a three-class vessel with increased accommodation, went out into the stream at Wellington on Saturday to have her compasses iidjusted. As the thiie for petting the ship rendy was limited, about three hundred men have been engaged on her, and a considerable amount of overtime was worked. She sails for San Francisco to-rrtori-ow. CHATHAM ISLANDS SERVICE. The. Chatham Island* steamer Teea arrived at Lyttelton «'n Saturday morninj from the Chatham Islandys. She brought two paßtjengers, ifr and Mrs Whatiri. An alteration has been made in the vessel's itinerary. Instead of leaving Lyttelton to-dav for Wellington and Waitanpi, she will sail for Wellington only, and is due back at Lyttelton on Thursday. She is to sail on Friday for the Chathams, where she will call at. Waitangi, Owenga, Kaingaroa, and Pitt Island. Thi« will be the Tees' last trip to the T.lands this month. Her succeeding trip Trill be from Lyttelton about January 10th.
