ROAD CONFERENCE.

MR A. D. PATERSON BACK FROM AMERICA. I THE PRESS Special Sarrlee.] AUCKLAND, November SO. Mr A. D. Paterson, of Christchurch, returned by the Aorangi after attending an International Road Conference at "Washington. The main subject of the conference was to find a cheaper form of permanent road construction. The general opinion was that oiled roads would best meet the case of rural districts unable to spend large sums. Oiled roads are ordinary metalled roadß, soaked with oil in the process of scarifying. They gave an excellent dustless surface, and when they became corrugated they can be easily re-scarified and rolled. They are the cheapest type of road it is possible to have.
