The Feilding Stakes was instituted in 1900, and in the 24 races that have resalted two-year-olds have won on only five occasions, the last to score being Surveyor in 101'.'. There is only one two-year-old engaged to-day and that is Korokio, who won the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui in September last, finished second in the Musket Stakes at lillerslie last month, but later was out of u place in the Taita Handicap at Trentham.
Phar liap and America. At one time (says the Melbourne '"Sporting Globe*') Mr Davis had the idea or' sending Pliar to Mexico to compete in the -\gua Caliente Handieaj) of 300,000 dollars (approximately £20,000). This race has a. maximum freight of !'-0. Agua Caliente is near San Diego, and not far irom TjOS Aiigelt-s. Jtacing is conducted continuously (Sundays included) for about 00 days. Another rich race in Mexico is the Coffroth Handicap (named after the founder of the racecourse) at Ti Juana. Eun on St. Patrick's Day, it | was worth 1*8,250 dollars (about j £19,C00) last year. So keen was Mr j Davis to try Phar Lap against the best horses in America that he approached I J. E. Pike on the subject of going to the j

TROTTING NOTES. A Starter To-day. Todd Loiizia was not started on tho opening day at Forbtirv Park on account of tho track not being to his liking. He will bo in action to-day. Stanley T. Stanley T. is tho most-talkud-ot horse in Dunedin to-day, and James Young, jun., is not iikely to make the mistake ho did on Thursday, when lie threw the race away. Stanley T. ia still the great trotter his Addington admirers know him to be. Royal Comrade. P.oyal Comrade is set to give away 7'2 yards in his race at Forbury today, but this should not worry him. He looks the part to win a double.
A Good Tilly. Belle Lorrimor is a much better filly than her lirst day's running suggested. She showed phenomenal speed, and it is a question as to whether Red Shadow can give her any start over anv distance.
Pageant Changes Hands. Mr IC. Hinds has purchased Pageant as a mate for Harold Logan. The latter is receiving a special preparation for the Auckland Cup. He is one ot the favourites, but will find Wrackler a very hard horse to beat. Auckland Cup. Although nominations have not been received for tho Auckland Cup, there is very keen speculation on the race and tho marks on which Mr Paul will place Wrackler, Harold Logan, and Logan Park. The first-named started off -1.25 in the Cup and won £l-100. Harold Logan, off 4.27, won £GOO, and Logan Park, off 4.23, a /so won £OOO. If all three are to be penalised 24 yards for their wins, Harold Logan will start off 4.20, Wrackler off 4 23, and Logan Park off -1.21. It is a question whether Mr Paul will consider tho money-winning horses.

THE AUCKLAND CUP. WEIGHTS DUE NEXT WEEK. fast records. Oil Wednesday next the handicaps for the Vuc.kland Cup and Baihvay Handicap the "great double" of the Auckland Kacing Club's Summer Meeting, Will appear, and much interest will centre in the handicappers opinions of the high-class horses nominated in both events. Nightmarch, winner of the Melbourne Cup last year and the New Zealand Cup last month, is the most distinguished entrant for the Auckland Cup (says the "New Zealand Herald"). He has never yet raced at Ellerslie, and his presence on Boxing Day would in itself be a great attraction. It goes without sayl ing that lie will be top-weight in the Cup. He carried 9-2 when he won the Melbourne Cup, and his success in winning the New Zealand Cup this month with 9-0, the maximum weight, constituted a weight-carrying record. There are no maximum weight conditions attached to the Auckland Cup to simplify the problem of exactly what weight Nightmarch will bo called upon to carry. Last year he was weighted at 9-10, but was immediately scratched. It does not seem that he can escape this year with less than round about 10-0, with perhaps a pound margin either way..
Few Winners with 9st. Nelson, winner of the Auckland Cup in throe successive years, carried 9-8 when he scored his second victory in 1880 and 9-12 in the following year. That stands as the record weight-carry-ing feat for the race. Wairiki won with 9-S in 1903, All lied with 9-1 in 1909, and Kapine with 9-8 in 1925. No other liorso has won with 9-0 or over. Apart from the probability that Nightmarch will have to establish another weight-carrying record if he is to win at Ellerslie on Boxing Day, there is the interesting fact that no horse has yet won the three Cups—Melbourne, Now Zealand, and Auckland. Sasanof went very closo to doing it. Ho won the Melbourne Cup with G-12 in 1916, and the New Zealand Cup with 8-9 in 1018, while in the Auckland Cup in 1918, carrying 9-G, he ran second to Mascot, 6-13. Concentrate, who won the Auckland and Wellington Cups last season and was «econd to Nightmarch in the New Zealand Cup this month, is another horse in whose weight considerable interest will bo manifested. Then there are Star Stranger, runner-up in the Auckland Cup last year, Hunting Cry, winner of the last Great Northern Derby, In the Shade, winner of the Wanganui Cup last season and third in the recent New Zealand Cup, Paquito, second to Nightmarch in tho Melbourne Cup, and My Own, winner of the Groat Northern Oaks last season and the Metropolitan Handicap at lticcarten this month.
Three Three-year-olds. The three-year-old division in the Auckland Cup always compels attention, although it is 34 years since one of that age was successful, Nestor winning in 1896. This year three three-year-olds have entered, namely Cylinder, Sargon, and Johneen, and most interest will be taken in the New Zealand Derby winner, Cylinder, who afterwards defeated Nightftiarch in the Stead Gold Cup. Mr A. B. Williams has two strings to his bow, and it may be that he will choose to rely upon Star Stranger in preference to Cylinder. However, ho is an owner who likes to give a good threo-year-old every opportunity, and in 1920 Gasbag, carrying his colours, was responsible for a fine performance for a three-year-old in running third to Starland and First Salute in the Auckland Cup, there being only a neck and a head between the three. Gasbag went on to win the Great Northern Derby. As far as age goes four-year-olds have the best record in the Cup with 21 successes in the 57 contests to date. This year eight of the 43 entrants are four-year-olds, namely, Hunting Cry, My Own, Count Palatine, Duellona, Motere, Monalof, Vali, and Bennie. Corinax, who won the Cup in 1928, nnd Concentrate are the only two previous winners engaged this year. Old Count Cavour is well worthy of mention, for he has figured prominently in no fewer than five Auckland Cup contests, being second in 1925, 1926, and 1927, fourth in 1028, and third last year. New Zealand's Best Sprinters. The Railway Handicap has as usual drawn the best Bprinters in the Dominion. Awarere, who won in 1927, and Hunting Cry, who was successful last year, are the only previous winners of the race engaged. Last year Paganelli was awarded top-weight, 9-12, but did not start, and Cimabue, 9-2, was topweight on tho day. These two have entered again this year. Among other notable ones are Autopay, winner of the Stewards' Handicap at Eiccarton; Gesture, the leading twoyo r-old last season; Supremacy, Hunting Day, Lady Quex, Toxeuma, Karapotl, Pegaway, and Cliromadyne. As in the caße of the Auckland Cup, interest in the Railway Handicap will be quickened by the appearance of the handicaps next week, and one horse to whose weight Aucklanders will direct particular attention is the successful Chromadyne.
