TRAMWAY BOARD.

election yesterday. ONLY ONE NEW MEMBER. The triennial election of members of the Christchurch Tramway Board was held yesterday, and although outwardly there appeared to be little interest shown, the number of votes recorded was larger than in 1927. The only change in the personnel of the Board is the election of Mr A. A. McLaclilan for the Riccarton-Fendalton sub-dis-trict, in place of Mr John Wood, who a' the 19-7 election, had a walk-over. All the Citizens' Association's candidates were returned. The New Board. 1 The new Board consists of tho following: — Central Sub-District. W. IIAYWARD. E. 11. ANDItKWS. GEO. T. BOOTH. 11. PEARCE. In the case of the Ricearton-Fendalton subdistrict, where the sitting member was defeated, the voting at the polling places in the sulj-district is given. An asterisk in front of a name indicates a member of the old Board; "OA." indicates a Citizens' Association candidate; and "L." a Labour candidate.

Tho arrangements made for the election by the Returning Oflicer, Mr Frank Thompson, were very complete. There were 88 polling places provided, as compared with 81 in 1927. The total number of names on the rolls was 61,991, as compared with 49,827 in 1927. Returns from the various polling places came in promptly in the majority of cases. The first to come to hand was that from the marquee at the corner of Wainoni and Cuff's roads, which reached the Returning Officer at 7.8 p.m. The returns from the Public Library, Waltham road, were the last received, and came to hand at 9.40 p.m. A fairly large crowd awaited the progress reports and the final figures in front of the Tramway Board's Office. Messrs W. Hayward, E. H. Andrews, Mrs E. R. McCombs, Messrs J. McCombs, M.P., M. 'E. Lyons, and G. T. Thurston addressed tho gathering. The Citizens' Association's candidates m et with a mixed reception. Mr K- Andrews said that ho regarded the vote as aii endorsement of tho previous Board's policy of economy and of giving the best possible service to the people. That policy would be continued, and the trams would bo run to gi ve ie best service to the people without recourse to tho striking of a rate and throwing further burdens on the ratepayers. Mrs McCombs was received with McCombs, M.P., while contulating {.] le successful candidates, snid that he believed they had secured their victory through tlie apathy of a larjro proportion of the people of Christchurch.
