"LEARN TO SWIM" WEEK.
ARRANGEMENTS DISCUSSED. To discuss arrangements for a "Learn to Swim Week," to be held from December 15th to 20th, representatives of swimming clubs, and schools, and delegates from the Canterbury Centr3 of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, from the Royal Life Saving Society, and from Surf Clubs, met last evening. Mr S. Hollander was in the chair. Mr Hollander explained that last year during the "Learn to Swim Week" there had been too many pupils in tho tepid baths for the instructors to do justice to them. He suggested that a fixed method of instruction be adopted. Last year different strokes had been adopted, with resultant confusion among tho pupils. If outside baths could be used it should be possible to teach a great many to swim. It would be necessary to get the City Council's permission for tho use of the tepid baths. It was decided that a meeting of instructors bo held on December Bth, of which all clubs, societies, and schools would be notified. It was decided to ask tho City Council for the exclusive use of the tepid baths, without charge, for an hour each day during the week, for the use of pupils and instructors, the time to bo from 5.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m., or such other hour as was convenient to tKo Council. Not more than 40 people are to be allowed in the baths at one time. Various speakers stressed the fact that prospective pupils must be nonswinimers. Those who merely wanted to improve their stroke, or to learn a new stroke, would not be instructed. The ides was to teach people enough of swimming to enable them to save themselves from drowning. Swimmers are to bo asked to attend at the tepid baths to assist tho instructors and to give demonstrations of the strokes. Instruction will bo available during the week at most of the outside baths where swimming clubs have their headquarters.
