In oonuexion with the May Day riots last year, when forty civilians, including the New Zealand journalist, CE. Mackay, were killed by the police, tiro police officers and a sergeant were charged with gross ill-treatment ot civilians. The sergeant was sentenced to four months' imprisonment and the officers were acquitted; Evidence was given that the police completely tost their heads and brutilly truncheoned the citiiefts while the officers looked passively on.
