COUNTY COUNCIL.

WAIMATE. The monthly meeting of the Wairuat* County Council was presided over by Mr John Bitchener, M.P., there being also present: Cra. A. S. Elworthy, H. M. Whatman. J. W. Chamberlain, R. Sinclair, "W. Lindsay, A. N. Hayes, and N. A. Rattray. The chairman stated that the Commissioner of Transport had met the District Highways Council in Timaru and the classification 'of rofids had been discussed at It-rgth. The District Council would ba making a suggestion to the County Council, that it should pass a resolution declaring all roads in the county second-class roads. This would limit loads up to eight tons Til* chairman asked members if they had any comment to make on the proposed new regulations in regard to the issue of motordrivers' licenses.

Cr. Whatman said he agreed with the regulations. There might be difficulty, however, in regard to the provision for physical fitness. How far were the examiners to go in this regard ? Cr. Lindsay: Yes, 1 think that is the only part of the regulations to which any objection might bo taken. He did not tbink, lie said, that a. person should have to go to the expense of obtaining a certificate. He added that it had been forcibly pointed out that those most physically fit Vv'ere those who had most accidents, because they took more risks, as a rule. It was decided that the cleric should writo to the Minister for Transport giving the Council s opinion on the provision in regard to fitness. In the matter of compensation to Mrs UufF for land taJcen for roadway because of erosion on Fisheries road by the Waitaki river, Cr. Whatman, for the special comrr.ittce set up, recommended the payment °f £8 per acre for the 7} acres of land. Cr. Lindsay said that in effect the DuS property was losing nothing from the river ercroachment as tho Council was payin<* for it. Ho asked was it not possible to avoid the river-bank? Cr. Whatman intimated the matter had. on gone into some time ago, and it was then found that a> road elßewhcr© would coßt £6OO. The committee's recommendation was adopted. For a supply of dog collars, Cr. Hayes moved that the collar offered for 7d by J. E. Watson and Company, Invercargill, be piocured. The Council was not thanked' for getting expensive collars, and these were hard times. Cr. Kattray seconded. Cr. Whatman moved an amendment tliat Mr W. F; George's tender of 8d be accepted. Local industry should be encouraged. Cr. Sinclair seconded. The motion by Cr. Hayes mas carried by five votes to two. Messrs H. J. Evans and N. T. Bell wrote agreeing to pay JJ37 10s each to the Council for protective works on Evans's frontage, above BrasselJ's bridge. In regard to the transfer of land from K. Parry, for the purposes of a public road, Messrs Hamilton and Fitch wrote stating they had been advised that the trustees did not propose to make any' charge for- the land taken, provided the C'ounoil paid their costs in connexion with the matter, amounting to £2 2s.

It waa decided to thank the trustees of the Parry Estate for their gift. The Waitaki County Coancil advised the adoption of the following resolution:—"That tho appointment of a traffic inspector be left in abeyance and that the matter be discussed again next year."
