NORTH CANTERBURY.
RANGIOKA. A special meeting of the Park Jubiee Gates Committee was held, when -ILr W. a. Rowse presided, and thcro were also present Messrs C. W. Tyler, K. U. R. Hmith, C. J. Smith, C. S. Ayers, W. (J. Prosser, C. Keir, N. Goldsber y> an d I. M. Fraser (secretary). Letters were roeeived from the North Canterbury Football Club, representing 150 members, and from the Rangiora Cricket Club, representing 50 members, protesting against the committee's decision not to place on the memorial gates the name of Mr W. A. Kowse (who was Mayor at the time of the jubilee), and asking that the omission be rectified. After a long discussion it was decided to adhere to the former decision, that no names be placed on the gates. At the request of the Borough Council it was decided to alter tlie date of the official opening to December 4th. at 7 p.m. As this was the last meeting of the com mittee, the following motion was passed: "The Gates Committee has worked in complete harmony under Mr W. A. Rowse, and is indebted to him for the excellent manner in which he has acted as chairman, and for the work he has done in connexion with the gates."
Mr C. W. Tyler presided at a special meeting of the Rangiora School Committee to consider an offer from Miss Bessie Mac Donald, of Christchurch, to give a dance recital with her pupils in aid of the school dental clinic. It was docided to accept the offer. Messrs W. A. Rowse, C. Dalzell, and S. G. Dalley wcro appointed a sub-committee to carry out arrangements. The Mayor and Mayoress of Rangiora and Councillors and their wives are to pay a visit to Temuka to-day as the guests of the Temuka Borough Council. At a sitting of the Magistrate's Court at Rangiora, before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., judgment was given in a case heard at a previous Court day, when A. M. Amor, threshing-mill proprietor, claimed £95 16s Bd, from M. S. Bower, farmer, on a contract to thresh lupin seed. There was a counter-claim by defendant for £2BB 15s, against the plaintiff for loss of seed through alleged failure to carry out his contract satisfactorily. Judgment was given for plaintiff for the amount claimed, £95 Jfis Bd, and costs, and on the counter claim plaintiff was given judgment foi £B2 Is 3d', anil costs. Frederick Robert Waller (rtilmerston North) pleaded guilty to failing to report an accident on August 17th last, when, in turning from Wales street into the East belt, Rangiora, his ear collided with u cyclist, doing damage to the cyele and also to a stack of drnin-pipos. Defendant also pleaded guilty to a churge of driving a motor-car without a driver's license. On the first charge he waf fined £lO, and costs 225; and on the second charge he was fined £lO, and costs 10s. Stanley Quick (Ashley) pleaded guilty to allowing two horses to wander on the roadside. Ho was fined 20s, costs 19s Oil. Judgment for plnintiifa, by default, was given in tho following cases:—Kinley and Fraser v. Stewart Br.ir, £4, eost.s £1 7s 6d; same v. J. W. Jackson, £6 16s sd, and costs £1 12s Gd; H. M. Hawkins v. W. Davidson, £23 10s lOd, and costs £4 lg. On a judgment summons Te M. Rangi was ordered to pay J. McMillan &4 16s lOd forthwith, in default four days' imprisonment.
The quarterly summoned meeting of the Bud of Hope Lodge, Itangiora, was* held, when Bro. F. Hill, A.D., presided. The nominations of officers were a*t follows;—A.D., Bro. P. Quartly; V.A., Bro. K. KAIAPOI. At a meeting of the Kniapoi Business Men's Association, wnich was held in the Council Chambers last ovening, Mr J. H. Blackwell presiding, it was decided that all members of the Association should nledge themselves to have nothing to do with the Universal coupon system; also that the member for the district be written to asking him to take steps, through Parliament, to have the system made illegal. One of the largest attendances tor some time was that seen at the meeting of the Trafalgar Lodge of Druids, Kaiapoi, on Tuesday night, when over 80 members were present from the Trafalgar, Bud of Hope, Rangiora, and Hope of Amberley lx>dges to welcome the Grand Lodge officers who were paying their annual official visit to the North Canterbury •''strict. The official party comprised the Grand President, Bro. M. O'Dono.rhue; Grand Secretary, Bro. J. Burgess; Grand Guardian, BroIS. Warren; and the Immediate Past Grand President, Bro. L. A. Morrison. Past District Presidents. Bros. W. Cooke and R. Bigg, two members of the Board of Management, also accompanied the Grand Lodge officers. The Grand President spoke at length cn matters in general relating to the Order and its progress in the Canterbury district. He stated that Druidism was making excellent progress in the Canterbury district, and despite the adverse circumstances which a great, many were at present being faced with, the membership had increased by about 150 since last year, and when all the returns for the November quarter were in. it was anticipated that the net increase would approach the 200 mark. The Grand President also made particular reference to assisting brethren in distress by making greater use of the benevolent funds of the various lodges. Bro. Burgess referred principally to the financial side of the Order, quoting figures in respect of the finances. He also made special reference to the advantages to be gained through the hospital bed scheme, which has been in vogue for some years. Hie stated that the Canterbury Hospital Board's scheme was looked upon as the model hosnital bed scheme of New Zealand The Grand Guardian and the Immediate Past Grand President also spoke, their remarks being more of a general nature. At the conclusion of the various addresses, the Grand Ixxlfje officers were thanked for tlieir attendance and the interesting information which had boen given. WAIKARI. There was a large gathering of people in the Waikari Hall at a dance arranged to hid farewell to Mr and Mrs Jackman. who are leaving the district shortly. Much of the success ot the evening was due to the work of Mr and Mrs Honevbone and Mr D. Rlneller. The music was supplied by Surridsre's Orchestra. Mr J. Header spoke on behalf of the residents, Mr It. B'ack for the School Committee, and Mrs Blunden on behalf of the Plunket Society. LEITHFIELD. The Leithfleld School Swimming Club held its annual meeting. Present: Messrs D. Palmer (chairman), H. May ; J. S. Russell, F. May, and J. W. Sarich. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £l4 16s lid. Last year's committee waa re-elected, and a vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Symes for printing the balance-sheets. A public meeting of Balcairu, Amberley, and Leithfleld residents was held, when arrangements for. the gala were discussed. Mr Hadley offered to convey persons from Balcairn station free of charge, and his offer was accepted. Tho sum of £5 was set aside for sports for the children. GREENPARK. The monthly meeting of the Tai Tapu branch of tho Farmers' Union was Held in the Greenpark Hall, there boing a good attendance. Mr J. Gilmour presided. An interesting and instructive adddress on the Clydesdale horse was given by Mi A. Leslie, veterinary surgeon from Lincoln Agricultural College. Mr Leslie also answered several questions of general interest to fanners. On the motion of Mr J, G. Fiecken, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Air Leslie. The Women's Division of the Farmers' Union nut in the Greenpark Hall, there being a good attendance. Mrs Henderson presided. After business matters had been dealt with Mr D. R. Blyth, of Lincoln, gavo a most interesting talk on basket work, his demonstration being very interesting. The members hope to have further instruction in this work next year, when Mr Blyth will give further help. On the motion of Mrs Morgan, seconded by Miss Laishley, a very hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Blyth. At the conclusion of the meeting the ladies were joined by tho members of the Farmers' Union at supper. SHEFFIELD.

T he monthly meeting of the Ivin'oln School Committee was held, when Mr I) Hoplev presided. The headmaster reported a roll of SO The attendance had not been good lately. The committee decided to authorise the headmaster to purchase prizes for the children, up to £l4 to bo spent. Donations from mnnv parents have enab.ed the committee this year to giv* every child a reward, in addition to the issue of the usual merit prizes. The chairman was authorised to procure bat, wickets, ana ball for use by the boys in their cricket matches this summer The committee decided that the most suitable time for the annual picnic would be early next school year, as at present there seemed very little likelihood of picnic weather prevailing before Christmas. Most of the urgent cases In connexion with the teeth of school-children at Lincoln have lieen treated by Nurse Oliver at the Hornby Dental Clmic. The Hornby Clinic is now closed for tho year, as Nurse Oliver has been pi need at the service of a clinic where many children are awaiting treatment A call is being prepared at Hokitika, a large charge of the Presbyterian Church, in favour of the ltev. Mi Naylor, who has been minister of the Lincoln Presbyterian Church for the last two years. The weather has not cleared since the heavy storm last Sunday. PREBBI ETON. The Prebblcton Sports Club continued their series of euchre tournaments and socials in the public hall, when there was again a gratifying attendance. Mr E. Woods's Band supplied the music for the dance, and Mr J. Smith was M.C. Vocal items were contributed bv Mr Lawrence. More than fifty players participated in the euchre tournament, highest scores being registered by Miss Winnie Burnett, Mrs K. McPhersoii, Mr G. Walker, and Mr T. Coleman. A tennis match, played on the Prebbleton courts between the second team and a team from Hornby, ended in a win for the visiting players.
