THE TRAMWAY ELECTION.
TO THE EDITOB OF THE PRESS. Sir, —I must congratulate the writer of your sub-leader on Wednesday morning for tho intensely humorous way in which he treated suggested policies for the improvement of tho tramway system of this district. But I would like to point out that the question may ,-bo a humorous one to the members of the party whose interest your paper represents, but it is a most serious question for the ordinary worker of this City, particularly when influential journals like yours attack his. rate of wages day in and day out. On tho one hand you desire a raid on wages, and on the other you support the policy of the present Board with its high cash, fares. That simply means that the workers will still be further handicapped in utilising the tramway service it" the raid on wages is successful. That being so, a rate is inevitable, because the only people who support the tramway service at the present, are these do not own motor-cars, and you know that the workers do not belong to the motorowning class.
Permit me, .Sir, to stale that the misstatements of the present members of the Board should be rectified in another sub-leader. For instance, one member stated "that there were only four inspectors employed in the service," but everyone knows there are seven inspectors on tickets alone. Another member stated that the Wellington City Council was going to cancel the universal ticket, but here is the reply from Mr McKeen, M.P., ■ a member of tho Wellington City Council: "Maj-or and Councilors strongly support universal traui tickets here. 4-\o thought of withdrawing it. Revenue from this one ticket last year & 106,~>62. Further, from next Sunday we commence transferable one shilling return tickets, which means you can travel from one extreme point to the other and return." I wonder is tho policy of cheap fares on Sunday a humorous question after this experience ot' Wellington?—s. ours, CtC '' GEO. MANNING. Trades Hall, November 2Gth, 1930.
