After several weeks of heavy entries in the fat cattle section, the total yesterday was n-uch smaller, being 325 head as compared vith 495 at lust week's sale, and 615 hcaa at the "double" market held three weeks ago. There were no lines lorward irom outside the province, and Bunks Peninsula graziers were fairly heavily represented. This is the first sale for many months that thero have been no cattle irom either the North Island or Otago and Southland. There was not the preponderance of heavyv/cight« sorts aj at last week's market. The shortness of the entry—it was no more than sufficient to meet butchers' requirements* for tliu week—was iesponsible for a keen demand for anything allowing quality The demand was a trifle irregular and there was a little "sagging" in evidence in some stages, but on the whole there was an increase. In odd cases the actual advance was as much as J£l 10s a head, an increase evidenced by th* prices secured for some lines passed in last week. Taking an overage over the whole auction, the advance on late rates was £1 a head over all
The top price for the market was £2l 7s Cd, secured for a steer sold on account of a client. i\ Leonardo had a good-sized consignment of 27 steers from the Peninsula, which brought from £l4 12s 6d to £l9 2n Gd. Another vendor had *25 head of mixed class forward, and four of them brought from £l9 2s 6d to £2O 17s 6d, and 15 cows up to £l7 7s 6d. Seven steers on account of W. F. Parkinson (Kaituna) brought from £l9 7s 6d to £2l 7s 6d. Top price for heifers was £ls 12s Gd, which figure was secured by E. Hay (Pigeon Bay), J. Judson (Woodend), and a client. There were some very primo cows forward, and this department was topped by a show beast sold on account of T. Streeter (Motukarara), which brought £lB 7s 6d. Best medium-weight beef made from 43a to 47s 6d; heavy beef made 35s Cd to 39s 6«l r cow beef from 37a to 41s, secondary beef frora 31s to 35a, and rough down to 2Gs.
