» —i OPERATION OF NEW BILL POSTPONED.

At a meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party, the president of the Board of Education, Sir Charles Trevelyan, announced that the Government had decided to postpone the operation of the Education Bill, which extends the school-leaving age ffom 14 to 16, from April next to September, 1932. Sir Charles Trevelyan himself was prepared, under protest, to accept thffi postponement of the Bill to September 1932, and also a certain suggestion regarding the powers of local authorities in respect of maintenance grants. When the Bill came before the House of Commons An amendment by Lord Eustace Percy (Conservative, Hastings), deleting the. whole sub-sec-tion defiling with the maintenance allowance, was rejected to 282 votes to 179.
