Miss Mclnmari, who has been tho guest of Mrs R- Volckmnn, "Braeburn,'' Geraldine, for a few weeks has returned to Christchurch. Professor J. Macmillan Brown arid Miss Helen Brown ("Holmbank," Cashmere Hillfi), who have been visiting England, are arriving in Wellington on Sunday and are expected in Christchurch on Tuesday morning. Mies Stella. Murray, who gave a very successful recital in Dunedin last slight, is returning to Christchurch on Friday, and leaves on Saturday for Marlborough, where she will spend Homo weeks visiting relatives and friends.

Miss C. Lascelles, the well-know n Victorian golfer, who played in the Golf Championship Tournament at Heretaunga last month, is arriving in Christchurch to-morrow for a short visit. Mr and Mr 3C. At a meeting of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Returned Soldiers' Association. held yesterday afternoon and presided over fcy Mrs H. T. J. Thacker, final arrangements were made for the bridge party, in aid of the Association's funds, to be teld in theJellicoo Hall to-morrow evening. It was reported that no effort had been spared to ensure tho success of the gathering. In Mr Georgo Murray-Aynsley's beautifu grounds, kindly lent for tho occasion, St. Barnab&s's parish foto will be held on Saturday afternoon. Mrs Croasdaile Bowen will open the fete at 2.30, and during the afternoon tho Hawaiian Band will play selections. Particular attention has been to the side-shows, which will include a particularly good Punch and Jud £ Show, Jaclc and the Beanstalk, ana marionettes, besides examples of coniuring and "magic. THE CHRISTCHURCH FREE KINDERGARTEN ASSOCIATION
The November meeting or the Christclmrch Free Kindergarten Association was held on Wednesday at the Y.M.C.A. Hal!, when Mrs J. K. Evans presided in the absence of the president, Mra H. T. J. Thackcr. Other members present were Mesdames T. E. Taylor, Hamlin, Bodda, Peverill, Pyne, Marshall, Kctallicli, Aitken,- Jarden, Bel lamy, Coddington, Miss Mdilraitb, and the secretary. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The final meeting of the year Sued for Wednesday, December 17tb. A memorandum from the Director oEducation was read regarding the restriction of payments to kindergartens. The mattor was left in abeyance for the time being, as nothing further could be done concerning it until next year, when it was decided to approach the Christchurch members of Parliament in connexion with the eame. The secretary was instructed to reply to a letter from Mrs G. E. Bridgeivater, of Timaru. A letter was read from tho secretary of St. Andrew's Kindergarten, asking whether they could take a second student, and it was decided to submit the letter to Miss Hull. On the motion of ."lira Taylor, seconded by Mrs Eetallick, it was resolved that the name of the Aasociation'a account at the P.O. Savings Bank be altered from the Christchiirch Creche to the Christchurch Freo Kindergarten Association, and that the hon. treasurer, Mrs K. Hadfield, bo authorised to operate on same. After some discussion, it was decided that each school could hold its Christmas tree on whatever day was suitable to its committee, but that the schools would remain open until Friday, Pevember 19th. Mrs Taylor reported that during her recent visit to Invercargill she had visited the three kindergartens in that, city, two of which were in charge of teachers trained in the Christchurch tichools. A new kindergarten was in the course of erection there, and it was expected thai this would be opened early next year. The following subscriptions were handed in:—Phillipstown £lB 2s, Bichmond £2 5s 9* d, Sydenham £lO quota, £lO reserve, Linwood £5, Selwyn £7, New Brighton £7 10s, Sunbeam £ll 10s 9d.
The school reports for the month were satisfactory, and the attendances had been very good. A number of new pupils had been admitted. The Toll numbers are as follows: —Sunbeam 02, Phillipstown 70, Sydenham 73, Sclwyn 53, Richmond 53, I-iinwood "45, New Brighton 44. The Sunbeam and Phillipstown Kindergartens had each celebrated its nineteenth birthday during the month, when parties were given for the children. On both of these occasions there was a splendid attendance ot' parents and friends.
Miss Hull gave very interesting talks to the mothers and members of the committees at Phillipstown, Sydenham, and Selwyn respectively.
It was reported that the mothers and teachers at Sydenham had held jumble sales on October 31st, as a result of which they were able to hand in £lO to the committee.
A successful coin afternoon party had been held at Selwyn, at which the children gave a programme of nursery rhymes, after which afternoon tea was served by the committee. It was reported that the children at Ahe New Brighton Kindergarten were becoming more acquainted with kindergarten life, and were enjoying visits to the beach on warm days. The committee arranged a very successful children's fancy dreßs party and carnival dance. Visitors during the month were Miss Andrews, Mesdatnes Dunbier, Wyatt, Jarden, Stewart, Mr and Mrs G. Taylor, Mrs and Miss Armstrong, Mesdames Glen, Montgomery, and Bundle. PARTY AT ASHLEY BANK. i • On Friday evening the Ashley BasI keiball Club gave an enjoyable dance in honour or one of its members, Miss Jean Criglington, whose marriage takes place this week. Excellent music way supplied by Hunnibell's Orchestra nncl extras were played by Miss Thelma Peach. Mr H. Schmidt acted as master of ceremonies. The dance-room ! was gaily decorated for the occasion. I Mrs J. C. Pateman (president), oil i tTehiilf of the club, presented Miss i C'riglingbon with a silver-mounted crystal salad bowl and servers, and wished her every happiness in the future Mr F. Mclntosn suitably replied on behalf or Miss Criglington.
