SKINS, PELTS, AND HIDES.

THE HOME MARKET. A POOR DEMAND. The market fur sheepskins and pelts in New Zealand has been the worst for years, and it is having a vital influence on the values paid for sheep for slaughter. The position docs not givo much indication of improving, judging by the reports from England. In its end of September produce circular t.ho London office of the National Mortgage and Agency Co. records that at the skin sale hold earlier in the month, of the quantity of sheepskins offered, about 50 pjer cent, was sold. Competition, except for combing length merinos, was poor, the Home trade especially being noticeably quiet. The bulk of the offerings of short-woolled skins and lambs was neglected and withdrawn. Average merino combings, compared with .Tuly sales, were 5 per cent, lower, clothings fully 10 per cent., fine crossbreds 7 per cent., medium and low crossbreds 10 per cent., and New Zealand crossbreds 7A per cent. New Zealand. Pelts. Very little business has been done in New Zealand stock recently. Domestic pelts are in such large supply in England and in the U.S.A. that tanners and splitters are finding far more than they requiro to cover the limited trading

that exists at the present time in sheep leather, hence imported pickled stock of any origin is neglected. Reports from the U.S.A. suggest that the conditions on that side are substantially worse than in England. American domestics are selling at about half what they were a year ago, and the trend of prices is still downwards. Under these circumstances quotations for New Zealand stock are only nominal.

The trade for raw hides has shown a slight improvement during the month, but very little recovery has been noticeable in values. Australian and New Zealand salted hides were given rather better support at reduced rates recently established, while New Zealand light salted, towards the close, are in request at steady prices. Dry salted Australians ruled dull of sale
