OBITUARY.

REV. FATHER GILBERT.

The death occurred last night of tho Rev. Father T. A. Gilbert, S.M., M.A., Ivoctor of St. Bede's College, after a long illness. Father Gilbert was born at Kumara in 1883, and received Ins early education from the Sisters of Mercy at Kumara, winning a scholarship from tho school which enabled him to go to St. Patrick's College, Wellington. From St. Patrick's College ho went to the Seminary at Meanee, Hawke's Bay, and after his five years' course there he joined the staff of St. Patrick's College. He was still too young by a few months to be ordained to the priesthood, but so soon as he reached the proper age he was ordained. While he was teaching he took an arts course at Victoria College. He was senior scholai in Latin in his year, and he graduated M.A. with honours in the following year.

Father Gilbert was appointed Rector of St. Patrick's College in 1919, and he held that position with distinction for nine years. After his term at Jt. Patrick's College he uas for a period of about, a year parish priest at Wanganui. He re-entered school life again to become Lieetor of St. IJede's College in 1929. Education claimed tho best energies of Fathei Gilbert during the whole of his adult lifo. As a schoolmaster he had remarkable success. Himself a distinguished classical scholar and a good student, he had the faculty for inspiring and interesting his pupils. His sterling character fitted him for the administration of a large school, and his work in Wellington and Christchurch as head of two of the largest Catholic boys' schools in the Dominion was of great value to those institutions.

Father Gilbert was one of the loaders of his Church in everything pertaining to education. Indeed he was for many years really the spokesman in New Zealand for his Church on Catholic education question'?. He was one of the founders )f the Private Secondary Schools' Association, and was until his death on the executive of the Association. While he was a student at Victoria College he founded the Catholic Students' Guild, and when he arrived in Christcliurcli one of his first concerns was to establish ft branch of the Guild here.

He lived to see the fulfilment of one of the greatest ambitions of his life. During his term as Hector of St. I'at lick's College ho did his best to interest the Catholic community in h project to build a school outside of the City. The College is not yet opened, but the new St. Patrick's at SilverFtreain, in the Hutt Valley, is almost completed, and is to be opened for boys at the beginning of next year. At St. Bede's Coiloge he was responsible for the building of the very beautiful chapel there. Father Gilbert is survived by five brothers and one sister. One brother is Father Jainos Gilbert, M.Sc., of Coogee, New South Wales; Brother Fergus, M.Sc., is on the staff of Sacred Heart College, Auckland; the others are Messrs John Gilbert, Kumara, William Gilbert, secretary of the Grcymoutli Harbour Board, and Gerald Gilbert, of Highden, Manawatu.
