NEW TRAM SHELTERS. ! LEGAL POSITION DOUBTFUL nbw recommendations BEFORE BOARD. After a- long discussion in comjnittee of a report by its representatives "at various conferences with the representatives of the City Council and others," the Christchurch Tramway Board carried the following resolution at yesterday's meeting:— "That in view of the fact that this is the last meeting of th e p re . sent Board, and in view of doubts as to the legal position, no action bo taken in the meantime respecting the erection of new shelters or the alteration of tram tracks." Those present were Messrs W. Hayward (chairman), E. 11. Andrews, H. Pearce, G. T. Booth, W. Williamson, J. Wood, W. J. Walter. D. Sykes, Mrs E. K. McCombs, and Mr Frank Thompson (General Manager). DICTATION ALLEGED. "Only the Labour Party stands for the maintenance of some form of shelter in the Square for tram passengers," declared Mr J. McCombs, M.P., at one of tho tramway election meetings last evening.

"If it wau not for the inconvenience it would cause the women find children," said Mr McCombs, "1 would .say, 'Let them Lake the shelter down and leave nothing in its place. Then we shall see how the public regard the matter.' "It is monstrous that a self-govern-ing community like the pei pie of Christchurch should allow itself to be dictated to by a Mussolini. In my opinion, th<i City Council and (he Tramway Hoard took the wrong course. I'he.v should have gone to Parliament with a Hill giving tho City control over the City, not the Supreme Court. If the Labour ticket is returned, we will join with the City Council in having this matter settled by tho people." COUNCIL POSTPONES DECISION. A fhort discussion on the proposals for the reconstruction • of the Square ensued in committee at last night's meeting of the ('itv Council, but no decisions were made as the committee set up to confer with representatives of the Tramway Board had not completed its report.
