REGENT THEATRE.
$ "THE BENSON MURDER CASE." Such was the success of "The Canary Murder Case" and the other crime stories which followed it, that it was only to be expected that Paramount would picturise tho fourth of S. S. van Dine'a mysteries, "The Benson Murder Case." This film, us excellent in acting and production as any of tho others, was presented last evening at the Regent Theatre. Apart from its interest as a story, it will have a particular attraction for Christchurch people from the fact that Beatty has in it her talking-picture debut. This time the murder is that of Anthony Benson, broker, on the evening after the Wall Street crash. While Philo Vance, the detective imperturbable, is discussing the methods of criminals, bis body tumbles down, 6hot through tho heart, from the staircase of the same room. After an intensive research, all the principals aro, as before, gathered together for the detective's denouement* which is as logical as it is unexpected. William Powell has again the principal role, carrying it off smoothly and effectively. An interesting programme of 'shorts completes the programme.
