HEIGHT OF BRIDGE BALUSTRADE.

CITY COUNCIL DISCUSSION. "I hope thai the City Engineer frill take notice of the height of the halu*trade tun the Carlton Bridge," said Cr. 0. £. Jones at last night's .meeting; of the City Council, when drawing attention to the proposal of the Council to erect a bridge over the deathcote river at Princes street, W<*jlston. Cr. Jonfes added that no doubt Councillors had read the criticism (recently made of the height of the balustrade of the Carlton Bridge. Cr. J. W. Beanland (chairman of the Works Committee): One man's opinion. Cr. Jones said that the Council should move with the times, tje understood that balustrades were erected for the protection of pedestrians; but. it wad time that attention w&« given to present-day traffic conditions. Cr. Iteanland stated he knew tiisjt there had been a good deal of criticism of the Carlton bridge; but he would point out that the Engineer in building the balustrade a certain height, was acting according to custom. If the balustrade of the new Princes street bridge could he lowered with safety, in order to frive a bitter view of approaching traffic, the Council could take it for granted that this woiild bis done.
