RICCARTON COUNCIL'S OPPOSITION. ALLEGED POSSIBILITY OF ABUSE. Some opposition to the proposed campaign to raise fun<Js for the St. John Ambulance Association's new building was shown at last night's meeting of the Bifccarton Borough Council, when an invitation was read from the Mayor of Christchurch to &ttpn(i to-dfiy's public Mayor (Mr H. S. Sj. Kyle, M?.) said that in his opinion it would be only o, short; iimp before the local bodies would be called upon to subscribe on the same lines a3 those in Wellington. ' ... Cr, W. Maeliin: We have neither the time por the money to support this movement. The "Mayor: That is why vre papula hsive someone to oppose it. In Wellington it is something like a §<3cond sro brigade, they havo pipe, or ten men in resitj-pnep, I don't know how many ambulances. When anyone is tafeen ill at a bridge party, instead of getting a taxi, they ring up for a free ambulance, and they gre home. It is cprtain to be abusefi.' ft* wag proposed that the Mayor and Cr. Maehin, and the town clerk (Mr R. should represent the Council at the meeting. The Mayor said that he eouid not attend, as he had an important engagement jit the Little River Show, Cr. Maeliin: 1 will go across for a littje time, if possible. Qr. Ft S. Wilding: With instructions not to support it. up. Machin: You .can be quite surG that that will be done.
