ACT OF VANDALISM.
TAR BESPATTERED BUILDING. "I should leave it as .i standing rAonumeht to the larrikinism of a certain section of the community," said Cr: W. Machin at last night's meeting <rf the Ricca'rton Borough ' Council, #2i£n a proposal to accept a tender to remove tar that had 'been splashed on a portion of the front £>f thef Borough Council office and Town Hall wae being discussed. All decent people, he added, would reprobate the defacing of public property. Cr. O. D. Fraser said that the majority of the residents thought that it was due to the Council's tar-pot boiling over. The Mayor (Mr H. S. S. Kyle, M.P.) said that it. happened shortly after the Council refused a permit for a dance hall. It was a bad act of vandalism. He urged that the work, the cost of which would be £7, should- be done, so that they could hand over a clean building to the new Council next year. On the ground that the expenditure was a luxury, and pure "eve-wash," Cr.' F. S. Wilding rnoved that the clause in the Works Committee's report recommending the acceptance of the tender bo deleted, and this was agreed to.
