Owing to the Waitaki power station being within measurable distance of completion, the Christchureh City Council does not intend to install a stand by pumping plant at the Cashmere pumping station, in connexion with the City water supply. Cr. J. W. Beaiiland, chairman of the Works Committee, replying to a reporter's enquiry on Saturday, said that the present plant is working satisfactorily. According to the Ciy Engineer's annual report the overall cost of pumping at the CasTimere station for 1929-30 was £5 10s 4d per one million gallons, as compared with £6 6s in 1928-29. Some amusement was caused at a dinner of the Manufacturers' Association in Wellington, when Mr L. A. Paish, British Trade Commissioner, said he had endeavoured to buy Now Zt-alnnd-mada soods wherever possible, but he would like to know where he could get collars made in New Zealand. Several members seemed about to jump up and say where collars were made, but when Mr Paisli mentioned that the size he required was 18} thev saw the humour of the question.. This unusual size apparently is not made in th« Dominion.
