PICNIC. A picnic party of 130 from the Halswell Sunday .School visited Lyttelton on Saturday and spent the day at Diamond Harbour. Cycling. Two cycle road-races wore held at Lyttdlton on Saturday afternoon with results as follows: —Under sixteen, to Kapaki and back: W. McDonald (4sec) 1, H. Smitliers (scr) 2, A. Jones (scr) :>. Fastest time waß secured by It. Smithers (scr) Slniin 40sce, second fastest by A. Jones, and third fastest by W. Lester. Open race, to Teddington and back: F. Hughes (Bmin) 1, A. Steele • (smin) 2, F. Hart (scr) 3. Fastest time was secured by llart, Ihr lomin 6sec, and fastest, time for an unplaced rider by E. Butcher (2min) lhr lSmin 40sec. Rowing. The Lyttelton Rowing Club opened its season on Saturday in fine -weather. The opening was informal and'there was a small attendance of supporters. A pair-oar race was held, with results as follows: —First heat, K. Wyman (str) and R. Sneddon beat A. \V. ■ Burbery (str) and T. Mather by ihreo-quartors of a length. W. Butcher (str) arid R. Poulsen beat E. J. Burbery (str) and W. Marshall by three-quarters of a length. R. Webb (str) and \V. Bradley drew with J. Whitford (str) and It. May. Somi-finals:. Whitford and May beat Wyman and Sneddon by half a length. Webb and Bradley beat Butcher and Poulsen by half a'length. .Final: Whitford and May beat Webb and Bradley by a canvas. Swimming. The Lyttelton Amateur Swimming Club held its first races on Saturday afternoon. In declaring the season open and wishing the club a successful season, the Mayor (Mr W. T. Foster) expressed the hope that the members would try to prevent any vandalism about tho beach. The races resulted as follows: —33 l-3yds men's handicap: J. Sabriddo (Bsec) 1, M. Dallas (7:sec) 2, S. T)romgoole (osec) .'!. Free dive: O. Farijuhar 1, F. Dromgoole 2. Underwater swim: i\ Dromgoole J, S. Dronigoolo 2, O. Farquhar 3. Sat ling. The Canterbury Yacht and MotorBoat Club held two sailing races on Saturday, an open class race and a race for Takapuna sailing punts. The new fourteen footer, Irene, was a competitor in the open race, but her performance was rather disappointing, and she was decisively beaten by Colleen by 3min 12see. Although Irene got the best of the start she was overtaken by Colleen before the first mark was reached, and thereafter Colleen steadily increased her lead. Conditions were not of the best for a test, the wind was very light at first but freshened in tho latter part of the race, and probably Steve Toomey would have liked a steadier and harder breeze . for tlio Irene. Colleen was skippered by George Brassel who, when barely fifteen years of age, won the Cornwell Cup for Lyttelton at Punedin in tho Exhibition year, and has other excellent performances to his credit. Results were as follows: —Open race (started at 3.10 p.m.): Colleen (finished at 5.1.25 p.m.) 1, Irene (finished at 5.i1.30 p.m.) 2, Usher (finished at 5.11.30) 3. Reverie retired. Takapuna class: Wet-U (W. Tissiraan) 1; Pauline (L. McGinty) 2. Zita broke her boom and retired.

Cricket. A match played at Officers' Point on Saturday, between teams representing the Lyttclton Miniaturo Rifle Club and the Lyttclton Young Men's Club reunited in a 'win for tho Young Men's Club by 133 runs to 72. For the winnerd, Gellcty 37, Morris 24, R. Collins 20, D. Collins 17, and for the losers, •L. Williams 51, batted best. For tho winners Hudson took eight wickets. Fire Brigade Inspection. C'aptaln T. J. Watts, Advisory Superintendent of the Volunteer Fire Brigades in New Zealand, paid a visit of inspection to the Lyttclton Volunteer Fire Brigade on Saturday night. After ho had inspected the brigade and plant he was taken for a run with th© brigade on the ijnotor, and tho machine was given a test up some of the steeper parts of- the town. At tho conclusion Captain Watts expressed greatest satisfaction with tho brigade and plant, and said his report would bo forwarded to the Borough Council in due course. He was afterwards entertained in the social room and gave an interesting address on Fire Brigade matters. The Mayor (Mr W. T. Foster), and Crs. A. McDonald (chairman of 'the Firo Prevention. C.otnmUtee),. W., T.. Lester, F. E. Sutton, L. G. Matthews, and M. J. Miller were present at the inspection. Chin Club. The Lyttclton Gun Club held its Clay Championship on/tble Club's ground, .Officers' Point, on; Saturday afternoon when some, good shoqting was witnessed. The winner proved-to be the veteran, 11. The second sweep, of six birds, was divided by Watkins, Matson, Whitford, and H. M. Wright, with all on. The third sweep, of six birds, was divided by W. Hcney, Grennell, E. Radcliffe, Hammond, and H. M. Wright. In a first-miss-out the stakes were divided by H. M. Wright and W. Wliitford on the ninth bird, with all on. After the shoot, Mr A. Miller, deputy-captain, presented the medal to H. Grennell and congratulated him on his fine performance, and also congratulated W. Hene-y on winning the second, trophy.
