ACCIDENTS.

LORRY PASSENGER KILLED. RUNAWAY DOWN HILL. tPitEdS ASSOCIATION T£L>EGZIA&.) AVELLINGTON, November 33. A passenger in a cab of a motorlorry was killed when heavily laden with drums of petrol, the vehicle got out of control 011 the way down L'aekakariki Hill on Saturday. After careering wildly down hill at a high speed for about 200 yards, it left we road, and somersaulted three times, being prevented from lolling COO leet to the bottom of tho hill only by striking a telegraph pole. A man was killed instantly when lie jumped troin the runaway vehicle, while tho driver, who remained at the wheel until the lorrv went over the bank, miraculously escaped with a broken leg, injuries to his back, and shock. They were tho only occupants of the vehicle. The man killed was Frederick Astridge, a married man with two children, ' who lived at 6 Taupo Quay, Waiiganui. Injured was George Ga- a single man, 'of Ivoputaroa, Levin. Tile lorry.' which belongs to the 11 awcra Transport Company, of which Astridge was the manager in Wanganui, was 011 its way from Wellington'with a load of approximately four tons. About a mile from the summit the driver found he had lost control, and that both brakes would not check sp-eed. His companion decided to make a jump for safety, but the driver remained at tho wheel until he was thrown out after the lorrv had somersaulted three limes. It was smashed to pieces, the fragments being scattered down the hillside. The chassis rested against a telegraph pole further down, and tho oil drums were at the foot of the hill.

, The injured man was taken to an hotel, and subsequently put abroad the express train nnd taken to the Palmerston North Hospital. He thinks something broke in the gear-box as he wa| coming down in low gear.
