THE SQUARE.
_—• REMOVAL OF SHELTER. TRAMWAY BOARD CANDJDAI KS* ATEVt'S.
'•I litve a threat, regard stn-i respect ('or the ideals of those who were responsible for the lnvins-out of tho Square. It is a great grief to me to r,ro the Cathedral surrounded by picture theatres and hotels and the Square out up by tramlines," said Mr G. T. Booth at a general meeting of the Chrisiehurcii Citizens' Association last evening, when the Association's candidate i'or the Tramway Board gavo addresses. "I think it is quite probab'e that the trams will be removed from the Square in time, ' said Mr Booth. "I disagree with some people in this respect, but I have a fervent hope that the Square will yet assume the character intended for it by the pionoers." Mr K ll'. Andrews said that some of the newspapers were saying that it was time that the Tramway Board declared its policy regarding the tram shelter. ' His opinion was, however, that there must be a shelter of some kind. Stopping the trams in the middle of the Square caused less congestion than would any other scheme. Personally he was an advocate of oneway traffic in that portion of the City. It seemed that the shelter would have to go, however. Mr H. Pearce said that he could not see how the trams could be re- , moved from the Square. It was the right place for them.
