A.P.A. ASSURANCE. DIRECTORS' ANNUAL REPORT. (UnTEI) PBKS9 ASSOCIATION—BY F.LKCTBIC TELEURAPH —COPYRIGHT.) SYDNEY, November 21. The directors of the Australian Provincial Assurance Association, Ltd., reporting on the year's operations to September 30th, consider the results satisfactory in view of the financial depression. They point out that continual increases in iupome taxes on companies which have to operate, in manv cases, on narrow profit margins, will, if persisted in, make it unprofitable to carry on, thus adding to the general unemployment. New business last year was valued at £502,000. The total premium income was £289 000. bonus to policyholders absorbed £50.000. and a dividend of 2i per cent, to shareholders übsorbed £8925. Life insurance funds amounted to £2,347,000. and assets total £2,937,000.

A WARNING. NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIA. The following brief statement on the state of affairs in Australia is contained in a letter to a friend in Christchurcli from a man, prominent in the financial world in New Zealand, who has recently returned from a visit to Australia: — "The whole of Australia is in a state of uncertainty, and the most knowledgeable financial men are not able to seo more than a month or two ahead at present. The outlook is depressing, and a severe crisis is looming up; but if the politicians will mend their ways and reduce their expenditure, it may be avoided. Over there taxation has been increased; there has been little or no retrenchment; and the national income has fallen grievously. And in this country what do we find? Very much tho same state of things. Impress most earnestly on ycur fr : eir.ls in Christchurch to warn Now Zealand to avoid the dangers and the pitfall into which Australian has fallen. ■"

As on the previous sale day, the outstanding feature about yesterday's fortnightly stock sale held at Leeston yards was a remarkably keen demand for store pigs, notwithstanding the fa-ct that the entry totalled nearly 200. The prices paid for stores had no relation at all to those ruling for fats, weaners five weeks old bringing up to 24s Apparently a liberal supply of milk on most farms, duo to the bobby-calf trade, is th«* main reason for th« keenness to purchase store pigs;. Eighty fat pigs were penned, and the values were a little easier than on the previous sale day. There was an increase in th© cattle yarding, the total number pen ned being 00 head. Except for tho best class of dairy cattle, the demand was by no means spirited. There was not a large entry of sheep, and a difference of opinion a*s to values led to Severn! passings. The sheep sales included 63 ewes and 63 lambs at 10s 7d, 168 store wethers at 14b Gd, 100 hoggets at 15s, 41 ewes and 31 lambs at 9s 6d, 22 ar:ed ewes and 11 lambs 4s 6d, 2 ewes at 16s 6d.
