NORTH CANTERBURY.
KAIKOURA. Heavy rain and hail fell ia Kaikoura at mid-day yesterday, following a warm morning. Further rain seems probable, with cooler conditions. There was a fall of snow on the mountains on Monday last.
Mr James "Walter, after forty years' residence at Kaikoura, has left for Waikato, where his sons, George and Ivan, have farms at Taupiri. Prior to coming to Kaikoura Mr Walter waa associated with the Woolston Tanneries. For some years he was chairman of directors of the local Dairy Company and president of the Bowling Club. He took a keen interest in Masonic affairs. Some time ago he sold his farm at Blue Duck, and went into retirement. His departure from the district will be regretted by many friends. HANMER SPRINGS. 1 lie annual general meeting of the Hanmer Follies was held in the Hanmer Hall. The company was congratulated on a successful season. The four performances presented in Hanmer since the previous annual general meeting had netted £33 16s 9d, which sum was distributed between the Domain Board, the school, the Presbyterian Church, and the Fire Brigade. In addition, a successful performance was given in Culverden for the benefit of the Culverden Ladies' Hockey Club. A rote of thanks for the untiring work of the retiring producer (Mrs P. Breckon), who finds herself unable to accept re-election, was carried by acclamation. Votes of thanks were passed to Miss M. Mansfield, Mrs G. Stevenson, and Miss T. Parsons for their services, and to the retiring officers, Mr E. N. Smith and Mr N. E. Toder. The following officers were elected for the next season:—Chairman, Mr K. N. Smith : hon. secretary, M.r N. E. Toder; stage manager. Mr F. Malaquin ; committee, Mrs P. Breckon, Miss "D. Peart, and Mr X. Barker; hon. auditor, Mr F. Correll. CUST. A very successful "hard-up - ' social organised by St.. James's Ladies' Guild was held in the Parish Hall, the object being to raise money for heating apparatus in the church. The pxoceeds amounted to £6 8s Various competitions were held during the evening. The prizes for the best "hard-up" costumes were won by Miss L. Wood and Mr Nansoii. Musical items were given by tho following:— Piano duet, Mesdames Ducat and Lock ; songs, Mesdames Briggs, Richardson, Tallott, Crysell, Briggs, Henderson, Richardson, and Messrs Ducat and Henderson. Competitions were won by Mesdames Overend, Crysell, Hichardson, Miss Allen, and Mr A. (■•artery; cake, Mr L. Elliott; doll, Miss A. J. Allen; lucky spot waltz, Miss E. Burrows and Mr AVntkins. Music for the dance was supplied by Mrs Brunsden and Mr J. Whithorn. The l»ev. G. B. ICanson thanked all who had helped to make the evening a success. Supper was supplied by the ladies of the Guil<S.
KIRWEE. The members of the Kirwee branch of the Mothers' Union gave a very enjoyable afternoon at the residence of Afrb G. A. Tijroer. Courtenay, for the -purpose of bidding goodbye to Mrs G. W. Soal, who is leaving the district. Mrs Soal has been secretary of the Union for the past two years. There was a full attendance of members. The Rev. G. W. Christian and Mrs Christian were also present. During the afternoon musical items were given by Mesdames G. A. Turner, It. R Belgrave, and A. Anderson, and Miss Christian. An amusing competition was won by Mrs W. Irvine. Mr Christian spoke of the good qualities of the guest and of the work done by her as secretary, and wished her a happy time in the district to which she was going. The president (Mrs A. Anderson) then asked Mrs Soal to accept a piece of china as a slight memento of her stay amongst them, together with the best wishes of nil the members. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies.
SOUTH MALVERN. N.G. Bro. W. G. Hunt presided over the quarterly summoned meeting of the Loyal Coleridge Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., held at Glentunnel. Bro. G. Currie, from the Ashburton Lodge, was welcomed, and a letter of recommendation from the same lodge, on behalf of Bro. C. C. Naish, was received. Three new members were initiated. After considerable discussion it was decided that the recently inaugurated special fund be named "The Benevolent and Incidental Fund." The election of officers for the ensuing term resulted as follows:—N.G.. Bro. A. King; V.G., Bro. R. H. Marsh; elective secretary, Bro. ,T. Mitchell; guardian, Bro. "VV. McPherfon; warden, Bro. L. Wells; R.S.N.G., Bro. L. Prestidge; L.S.N.G-, Bro. C. Milne; R.S.V.G., Bro., T. Bain; and L.S.V.G., Bro. G. Gurne.
