ashburton. SEVERE STORM. The most severe electrical storm which has visited Lowcliffe for many years was experienced oil Wednesday afternoon, when the elcctrie lighting system was badly disorganised, some of the children in the school were terrified owing to the proximity of the flashes, and animals in the district were greatly disturbed. The damage to the electrical system was spread over an area of five miles. Three polos on Emerson's road wera badly shattered, some of the splintered wood being hurled a hundred yards away, a switch was burnt, and Bome transformers were smashed. The Power Eoard's staff was quickly on the scene, and worked until a late hour on Wednesday night rectifying the faults.
In Bankruptcy. A petition in bankruptcy has been filed by William John Roulston, labourer, of Tinwald, and a meeting of creditors will be held in the Courthouse. Tennis. Heavy showers of rain were experienced in Ashburton yesterday morning, and although the remainder of the day was dull, the sun shone at intervals. In some districts, especially towards the coast, more rain is required. Hakatere Lodge. Hakatore Lodge Xo. 68, T.0.0.F., met when the N.G. (Bro. C. Garforth) presided. Three brothers were reported sick, two candidates were initiated, and two proposals were received. Motor-Cycling. At the monthly meeting of the Ashburton Motor-Cycling Club, Mr G. T. Clarice (president) occupied the chair. Correspondence was received in connexion with the proposed motor-drivers' regulations. Those referring to motorcycles and side-cars were approved. Arrangements were made for the annual inter-club rally to be hold at Mr 11. Brown's place, Seavicw, on Sunday, November 23rd. It was reported that Christchurch and South Canterbury Clubs would be represented. The following programme was drawn up: Musical hats; tug-of-war; serpentine race; acceleration race; obstacle race, and hurly burly.
Two now members were elected, bringing the total only a few short of one hundred, which is the club's objective this year. Cricket. The fortnightly meeting of the Wakanui Good Templar Lodge was held in the hall at Wakanui. Bro. H. Doak, C.T., prpskled over a large attendance. Officers' reports were read and adopted. A vot.c of thanks was passed to the officers. It was decided to hold the annual church parade on Sunday, November 30th. Arrangements were made for the annual picnic. It was agreed to give a medal for the winner of most points in the sports events. A very hearty vote of thanks was passed to Bro. W. Begg and the secretary for their help in connexion with the banquet. On behalf of the lodge members, Ero. F. Frampton presented Bro. A. Wilson, L.D., with a fountain-pen, in recognition of what he had done for the Lodge. Farewell to Mayor. ' A meeting of citizens to consider the most suitable farewell to the Mayor (Mr R. Galbraith), who is leaving about the end of the year to reside in Stratford, was held last evening, the De-puty-Mayor (Mr B. Kerr) presiding. The chairman said that Mr Galbraith had been Mayor of Ashburton for sixteen years, during which time he had studied the interests of the town and district, and had helped many deserving causes, especially during the days of the Great War. The town clerk (Mr W. Patterson) was elected secretary of the committee. It was decided that Mr Galbraith be given a public farewell and presentation. , The members of the Borough Council, the county engineer (Mr A. A. Fooks) the county clerk (Mr G. Kelly), and Mr A. Horsey (a member of the County Council) were appointed an executive. It was decided that the Soldiers' Club, the Technical and High School Boards, the Lyttelton Harbour Board, the Advance Ashburton Association, and the Chamber of Commerce be each asked to appoint a representative on the committee. Inter-Scliool Tennis. A return tennis match was played between the girls of the Ashburton Technical and High Schools yesterday, and resulted in a win for High School. Tlio returned soldiers of the Launston district held a meeting for the purpose of arranging a function suitably to celebrate the first anniversary of thn opening of the Memorial Hall. Mr A. J. Rushton was voted to the chair and Mr J. Wheartv was appointed After discussion it was agreed to hold a dance, tha pro-
ceeds of -which will go to the Lauriston School's picnic and prize fund. Shearing operations have commenced in this district. Rape and turnip crops are now being sown, and farmers are taking full advantage of the drying winds to work the land well, thereby eradicating twitch and weeds.
RAKAIA. The yearly summoned meeting of ike Loyal Bakaia Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0.T'., was held in the lodge room. Sister I. V. Bishop presiding over a large attendance. Arrangements were made for the official visit of the district officers. The election of officers resulted as follows: —I.P.N.G., Sister 1. V. Bishop; N.G., Bro. W. A. Palmer; V.G., Bro. T. Gaylor; E.S., Sister E. England: Warden, Bro. P. Plucl;; Guardian, Bro. A. Osborn. One candidate was initiated into the Order and one was proposed for membership. The secretary reported that the membership had increased by fifty per cent, during the year. The induction of the Rev. A. F. Burnett, as vicar of the parish of Rakaia, will take place at St. Mark's Church on Sunday afternoon, when Bishop WestWatsoa will conduct the service.
