COLLEGE HOSTEL.
N'EW WELLINGTON BUILDING. The (oii»ler 01 the Fletcher Construction Company at a figure approaching £50,000 has been accepted for the erection of the first, seetion of a hostel in Ralantanca road for the Victoria University College, Wellington. The building, which will be known as tho Weir Hostel, ia to be erected on property formerly occupied hy the resir den re of Mr Martin Kennedy, which lias an ideal outlook over the harbrtur and city. Provision is being made for the erection later of two hostel blocks and an extra wing to the first block. The building, which will acuontr modate about 100 pupils, ia to be Lshaped, (he greater length facing tho harbour. The fining-hall block, in thig case T-shiip«ul, will be erected on Ipwor ground to the west of the hostel. This building will contain, in addition to the dining-hall, kitchen and living quarters for the staff and a modern laundry. Sun in Svery Room. llot.lt buildings, of three storeys, have been designed in tlie Georgian style a«id on earthquake'rasisting principles, and will bs constructed in brivk and coloured cement. A portico with eolumns supporting a pediment will grace the main entrance, n.r.d in tiia eentre portion of the eastern elevation will be an imposing colonnade. The hostel building h*s been designed so that every bedroom and study will have sunshine rA some nje of the day; the common room, froro. its situation at the end of the northern wing, will have sunlight all round it. A feature will be students' pantries on each floor. There will also be a largo recreation room, changing rooms, showers, drying rooms, house eommitteo room, visitors' room, and warden's quarters. The interior will be given a plaster finish, with woodpanelled walls in parts. The ereetion of the hostel has bt;en made possible by the generosity of Mr William Weir, a resident of Wellington for over fifty years, who <Jie<j in 1930, leaving provision in his vyiU for the payment to the College Council, after the deduction of death duties iind £9OOO for other bequestß, of half the residue of the estate fon the purchase of A site and the erection of a hostel for men students. Tho remainder of the estate was lodged in trust for the Council.
